Halitosis is an embarrassing problem that cause a person produce unpleasant odour from the oral cavity. The peculiarity of this problem is that the person himself could not realise about this.
It can affect any one at any stage of life. There are several reasons that support the cause of halitosis and it could be both acute and chronic.
Causes of halitosis
The first thing that comes into mind for this problem is poor dental hygiene. Laxity in proper brushing and flossing of mouth (teeth, tongue and cheek) leads to bacterial overgrowth that degrade the retained food particles stuck in different parts of mouth cavity to produce putrefied smell.
Halitosis can be associated with dental infection (periodontal disease) or respiratory tract infection such as throat, sinus and lungs infection. Consumption of excess coffee, cigarette, garlic and onion can also cause halitosis.

Before starting the treatment one should visit the doctor to know the exact cause of this disorder. Various natural treatments can treat halitosis effectively when it is due to bacterial action in mouth cavity and related gum problem.
Brush and clean the tongue surface properly, since odour (sulphur) producing bacteria loves to grow on the surface of tongue. Proper cleaning of the tongue surface would eliminate trapped food particles thus inhibit bacterial growth.
Use baking soda for brushing the teeth. Just dab some soda on damp tooth brush and use it like tooth paste. It will freshen up the breath by killing bacterial population.
Avoid eating refined and sugary food stuffs such as chocolates, sweets, carbonated drinks, jellies any ice creams etc. as they tends to stick between teeth and on tongue to harbour bacterial growth.
Use tea tree oil as a toothpaste additive, for this just add 2 drops of this essential oil on toothbrush along with regular toothpaste. Use it as gargle, by putting 3 drops of it in warm water. Prepare a mouthwash by boiling some coarsely chopped parsley in water. Add 5-7 cloves into it, let the mixture boiled thoroughly. Once cool, use it as a mouth wash.
Prepare a brew of fenugreek seeds by boiling a teaspoon of it in one litre water for 15 minutes. Let it cool down completely then sip it as tea at least thrice daily. It cures the problem of halitosis caused by bacterial action and upper respiratory tract infection.
Eating unripe guava and its tender leaves can treat the problem of halitosis effectively. Since this fruit contains several minerals such as manganese, oxalate, phosphoric and tannic acid along with calcium in ample quantities, they fight the problem of halitosis by curing gum problems and oral infection effectively.
Chewing various aromatic spices such as fennel, cardamom and clove can solve the problem of halitosis as their strong antimicrobial property prohibits bacterial growth in mouth cavity.
Chew mint leaves regularly as mint is a natural mouth freshener. It impairs bacterial build up in mouth to cure halitosis. One can prepare a mouthwash by boiling fresh mint leaves in water. Put one or two drops of oregano oil in a glass of water and drink it on regular basis to fight halitosis.
