6 Natural Remedies For Pink Eye
Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, is a very common infection afflicting the eyes. The symptoms of the infection include inflammation and redness of the eyes. There is a lot of discomfort and pain during pink eyes. Though the infection does not last for more than three days, it needs to be treated immediately in order to prevent the condition from aggravating.
There are over-the-counter medicines available for treating pink eyes. However, herbal remedies also bring immediate relief from the discomfort and pain associated with the condition.
Herbal/ Natural Treatment for Pink Eyes
Prepare infusion of witch hazel by boiling witch hazel leaves in clean water. Strain the solution and allow the resulting liquid to cool down to room temperature. Splash the witch hazel solution on your eyes after every half-an-hour. This will bring relief from swelling and redness of the eyes. You can also refrigerate the solution to cool the eyes.
Boil handful of leaves of Indian Lilac (neem) in about 500ml of water. Allow the leaves to steep in boiling water for at least an hour. Use the strained water for cleaning the eyes. You can splash the water on your eyes or dip pieces of sterilized cotton and clean your eyes with the treated cotton.
Take two used bags of chamomile tea (or peppermint tea) and clean them well. Refrigerate the cleaned tea bags for at least a couple of hours and then apply them to your infected eyes. The soothing effect of the chamomile and peppermint tea will help bring down the inflammation of the eyes and also reduce the redness in the eyes caused due to infection.
Purchase Triphala powder from an ayurvedic store. The powder is used for aiding weight loss process. To cure pink eyes mix 1 ½ teaspoon of Triphala powder in a cup of cold water. Splash this Triphala solution on your eyes every time you feel the need to itch intensely. This treatment will help reduce inflammation of the eyes.
Take two thin slices of cucumber and place them in the fridge for 15-20 minutes. Place the cooled cucumber slices over your eyes to bring down inflammation. You can even use potato slices instead of cucumber slices.
Fennel seeds are popularly chewed on post a heavy meal as they help with digestion. However, fennel seeds are also a good way of treating the symptoms of pink eye. Steep three tablespoons of fennel seeds in a cup of hot water. Leave for 20 minutes and then strain the solution. Take a spray bottle and pour the resulting liquid in it. Spray the fennel water directly on your eyes after every half-an-hour. The water will bring immediate relief to your hurting and inflamed eyes.
To quickly get rid of pink eyes, it is important to keep yourself from touching your eyes. Wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap and water every hour so that even if you do touch your eyes accidently, there is less scope of aggravating the infection. Do not share your clothes, especially towel, with anyone. Wear sunglasses to avoid any discomfort due to bright lights.
