About Sexual Addiction

Sexual addiction is a disorder in which a person is not able to manage his sexual behavior. Sexual addiction is also called as sexual dependency and affects males as well as females. A person suffering from sexual addiction is obsessed with sexual thoughts.

Sometimes, this obsession is so much that it becomes impossible for a person to concentrate on work or manage his relations. Daily routines are badly affected due to this sexually compulsive behavior. High sexual drive in females has been termed as nymphomania while in males, it is called as satyriasis.

In sexual addiction, the sex drive of a person is very high and may be termed as abnormal. Sex dominates his life and as a result, interactions with other people are badly affected. It has been observed that people suffering from above disorder deny this fact and even they go on to justify their behavior. Various logics are given by such people, which look quite irrational. In studies conducted, it has also been found that there is strong relation between the risk taking capabilities and sexual addiction.Patients of sexual addiction take high risks without considering the possible consequences or repercussions.

Sometimes, due to this behavior, they put their health at high risk, as many types of sexually transmitted disease can get transferred. Due to obsessive behavior, physical risks are also taken by a person many times, which have proved fatal in many cases. One aspect that has to be understood is that initially, a person gets involved in an otherwise enjoyable sexual situation. This, later on, develops into obsession and as a result, sexual addiction occurs. There is no limit of fantasies developed in the mind of patient and since there can be actual acts too for satisfying the desire; same are not easily understood by other people.

It is still unclear why a person suffers from sexual addiction. There are some antidepressant medications available in the market that can treat sexual addiction or excessive sexual drive of a person. Similarly, there are some psychotropic drugs that are found to be effective. Some scientists have linked this disorder to various types of chemical changes occurring in the brain.
