There are many causes like diet, incompatible food, emotions and nerve reflexes may impact on the acid secretion.
- HIGHLY ACIDIC DIET – it is recommended that 80% of the diet should come from alkaline-producing foods for most people. This refers to a large amount of fruits and vegetables (alkaline-producing foods) and decreased acidic foods such as non-vegetarian, spicy oily, cheesy and starches, etc.
- NEGATIVE EMOTIONS – it is fact that eating while one is angry or upset can surely raise gastric hyperacidity.
- INCOMPATIBLE FOOD PATTERN – even though foods those are alkaline-producing or mildly acidic may produce hyperacidity in the stomach and if consumed improperly. One of the most noticeable evidence for improper food combining explained in numbers of books is citrus and cereals. Here the chemicals that is needed to digest citrus and cereals are incompatible finally resulting into gastric hyperacidity
- NERVE REFLEXES – the gastric secretions are affected by the nerve reflexes from nerve centers which are in the cervical and thoracic areas of the spine. That is why somewhere in certain readings gastric hyperacidity is attributed to somatic dysfunction.

pittam swahetupachitum pura yadatamla pittam pravadanti santah // "– Madhav Nidana uttarardha
When the Pitta Dosha which is already aggravated in varsha ritu (rainy season) gets again disturbed by taking viruddha bhojan (incompatible food like fish with milk), vikrita bhojan (stale food), ati amla (too much spicy and sour tasted), vidahi (decayed or stale) and those items which shoots up Pitta Dosha (like fried, fermented food, smoking, alcohol etc) from its normal state then the vitiated Pitta Dosha takes seat in stomach and produces hyperacidity – Amlapitta.
