Medically this is known as Acne vulgaris. This is nothing but eruptions on the skin due to many reasons. Ayurveda describes this as pidika (a pustule or small elevation in rounded shape anywhere in the skin especially faces). This usually affects the age 12 to 35 in both the genders.
There are two major classifications of acne. They are non-inflammatory and inflammatory acne.
There will be no significant swelling and hence this comes under non-inflammatory acne. This is again divided into two sub-categories…
Whiteheads: In this condition, the sebum and bacterial gets blocked under the skin and the whitehead is formed. These are nothing but the small white spots. They can or can not be visible by naked eyes varying upon their sizes.
Blackheads: This is developed when the sebum and bacteria are partially open to the skin’s outer surface. Due to skin pigment, the spot turns into black color. This occurs due to the reaction of the melanin (pigment) with the oxygen present in the air. Blackheads are considered to be stable structures and may last long. These may allow the pore’s content to drain very slowly to the surface.
There will be significant swelling and hence it is called as inflammatory acne. This is again divided into two sub-categories…
Papules: This occurs when our white blood cells (WBC) rush into the broken follicular wall and creates swelling. This red bump is called as papule. Papules can be large and tender and sometimes quite small. The papule may be seated beneath the surface and could be healed or may turn into the pastule.
Pustules: This is formed after couple of days when white blood cells (WBC) make their path to the surface of the skin. This is popularly known as zit or the pimple itself.
