Aphrodisiacs

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Aphrodisiacs - those delicious tit-bits that tickle the palate and whet sexual appetite. While some gently nourish a lagging libido, others kick it into high gear. Be creative with your menu and take your love life to new heights.

According to Greek mythology, Aphrodite - the goddess of love, beauty, fertility and desire had emerged from the waters carrying some herbs with her. The plants she brought had powers to excite sexual desire, and came to be known as aphrodisiacs. But the use of aphrodisiacs is not limited to greece only. People of all cultures have used, and continue to use aphrodisiacs. their use, in fact, has been documented for the last 60,000 years!

We bring you a list of the 'most effective' aphrodisiacs

CHOCOLATE:

Dark and sinful, chocolate is no longer seen as a fattening food. Scientists have now established what women have known for centuries - that chocolate is one of the most effective aphrodisiacs available. Chocolate contains some stimulants as well - caffeine being the most famous, as well as small quantity of theobromine, which lifts the mood of chocolate lovers and gets them in the mood or romance and fun.

GINSENG:

Ginseng is an exceptional vitalising plant with over 5,000 years of successful usage. The root of the plant is mostly used as powder. Ancient Chinese philosophy believed that Ginseng alleviates stress, fatigue, exhaustion and helps restore potency in men due to its blood circulation support. In Atharva Veda, it is said: ginseng provides both young and old men the vitality and strength of a bull.

APPLES:

Considered the element leading to the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, the apple thus became a symbol of sexuality. The fruit is also used in love spells. It was believed that if a women slept with an apple and persuaded the man she loved to eat the apple, he would fall madly in love with her. Moreover, it is a fact that juicer apples are widely used in erotic games because their juice awakens passion in men.

HONEY:

The kama Sutra, the perfumed Garden (ancient Arabic equivalent of Kama Sutra) and even the Bible mention honey as a symbol of love, sex and sensuality. No wonder we call the object of our affection 'Honey'! Avicenna, the great Arab physician (11th century) prescribed honey mixed with ginger and a little pepper to stimulate those love hormones!

MILK:

Milk has been used as an aphrodisiac since times immemorial. It is an age old tradition in India to mix crushed pepper and almond in milk nd give it to the bridegroom on the wedding night. The Kama Sutra advises couples to use fresh fennel juice with milk as an aphrodisiac. Milk mixed with honey, ghee, licorise and sugar stimulates desire.

EGGS:

Eggs are one of the most ancient symbols of fertility. Plain, raw chicken eggs can be eaten to enhance libido. The icing on the cake is that eggs are high in vitamin B6 and B5, which helps you balance hormone levels and fight stress, even pre-wedding blues.

PINEAPPLES:

Pineapple is an invigorator and has a great digestive and purifying effect. A glass of fresh pineapple juice is especially vitalising. For aphrodisiac effect, eat sliced pineapples with chili powder or mix with honey and rum. A small glass of the fruit's juice taken daily promotes energies of love.

OYSTERS:

Oysters have been accepted as an aphrodisiac as early as second century. Romans believed that women became wanton after having wine and oysters. In ancient Rome, thousands of slaves were sent to the English Channel to gather oysters for feats. Another interesting fact is that the legendary lover Casanova ate 70 oysters a day to maintain his renowned sexual prowess. The fact, however, is that oysters are a rich source of zinc which plays an important role in sperm production and strengthening the immune system.

ROSE:

The rose is said to be the favourite flower of Venus, the Roman counterpart of Aphrodite. In history rather than mythology, the Romans truly had a passion for roses. In ancient times, people often gorged on rose pudding to revitalize their sex life. Roses were extremely prominent at the Bacchanalia, ancient Rome's official orgy. So, garnish ice-creams with rose syrup for a delectable dessert together.

BETEL PALM:

Betel palm contain alkaloids that have stimulating effect on the entire body, particularly the erogenous zones. It is a traditional aphrodisiac in Ayurvedic medicine and is counted among the eight types of pleasure in the Brahmantic tradition. It is supposed to have magical properties and is used as an offering to Gods.

STRAWBERRIES, RASBERRIES AND WHIPPED CREAM:

Strawberries, Rasberries and grapes are perfect for hand-feeding your lover. They are high on vitamin C and considered fruits of love. Whipped cream is another favourite. Buy a kilo of heavy cream, put it in the mixer with a little powdered sugar and whip till it turns soft. Drop in a half-teaspoon of vanilla or orange flavour and enjoy the affect later.

VANILLA:

Vanilla is smooth, clean and can act as an instant mood-lifter. The scent of vanilla alone is often enough to stimulate both male and female libido. When consumed, vanilla, like chocolate, aids the central nervous system. So buy tonnes of vanilla you head for a romantic weekend.

CAVIAR:

This food, out of range for most budgets, apparently has qualities that nourish and enhance nerve cells, which can heighten romantic instincts. Caviar's powers are reinforced with the addition of vodka, so indulge both passions at the same time and have a blast.

TRUFFLES:

Truffles are believed to contain a chemical that is similar to the sex hormones of humans and pigs! The fact that truffles are rare and expensive adds to their mysterious and romantic reputation.

PUMPKIN SEEDS:

Eat a handful of pumpkin seeds an hour or so before your rendezvous to get a lift from tyrosine, a mood-elevating amino acid that has ben shown to snack increases alertness, giving you an energy boost before bedtime. Eat them raw or roast them at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes with oil and a pinch of salt.
