It is a chronic or long lasting inflammatory disease in which there is swelling of the airway pipe or wind pipe and hence narrowing the path supplying air to the body. This stricture produces wheezing and breathlessness. This could be due to any allergy or some pathogenic causes.
When the asthma symptoms get exacerbated, then it is known as an asthmatic episode or attack. During, these muscles around the windpipe gets tough and so tighten. This results into airway contraction and hence inadequate amount of air flows through. As the inflammation increases, the airway becomes more swollen and so even narrower.
Cells in the wind pipe secrete more mucus in the canal than the usual. This is because the irritation is continued and body cells give response to that. The extra mucus also constricts the airway. All these changes make it more difficult for the person to breathe.
Attacks of asthma are never same. They differ from person to person. In major attacks, the airway can be blocked up to such an extent that there will be lack of oxygen to vital organs. This is a medical emergency condition and people can die from this attack.
If the asthma is not under controlled, one is likely to have symptoms that can make a child missing a school and an adult disturbing the daily routine. Asthma is one of the major problems for children missing the school.
When the Vata Dosha along with Kapha Dosha gets vitiated, it gets the seat in lungs, heart and in wind-pipe. This gives trouble to the person. This condition is termed as tamaka shwasa.
