A) Arthritis, Joint Pains, Spondylitis, Gout

Arthritis is one of the most common chronic diseases in the world. According to Ayurveda arthritis is primarily a vata (air) disease which is due to accumulation of toxins in the joints and is known as amavata. This can be caused by poor digestion and a weakened colon, resulting in the accumulation of undigested food and the buildup of waste matter. Poor digestion allows toxins to accumulate in the body, and problems with the colon allow the toxins to reach the joints.

Symptoms:

  1. Fever
  2. Immense pain & stiffness in affected muscles in case of chronic muscular rheumatism.
  3. Pain or tenderness in a joint which is aggravated by any movement or activity, such as walking, getting up from a chair, writing, typing, holding an object, throwing a ball, turning a key.
  4. Excruciating pain and stiffness in the joints in case of chronic articular rheumatism.

Types of Arthritis:

Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease in which the cartilage that covers the ends of bones in the joint deteriorates, causing pain and loss of movement as bone begins to rub against bone. It is the most prevalent form of arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis, is a chronic disease characterized by inflamed joints leading to swelling, pain, stiffness, and the possible loss of function. It occurs when the body's immune system attacks tissues (groups of cells) that make up joints. This destroys the joint's protective cartilage (the firm, rubbery tissue that cushions bones at the joints). The cartilage in those with rheumatoid arthritis breaks down and wears away. As a result, the bones rub together, causing the pain, swelling, and stiffness associated with this condition.

Gout, which affects mostly men. It is usually the result of a defect in body chemistry. This painful condition most often attacks small joints, especially the big toe. Fortunately, gout almost always can be completely controlled with medication and changes in diet.

Ankylosing spondylitis, a type of arthritis that affects the spine. As a result of inflammation, the bones of the spine grow together.

Juvenile arthritis, a general term for all types of arthritis that occur in children. Children may develop juvenile rheumatoid arthritis or childhood forms of lupus, ankylosing spondylitis or other types of arthritis.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus), a serious disorder that can inflame and damage joints and other connective tissues throughout the body.
Scleroderma, a disease of the body’s connective tissue that causes a thickening and hardening of the skin.

Fibromyalgia, in which widespread pain affects the muscles and attachments to the bone. It affects mostly women.

B) Basic Skin Care

1. Cleansing

Cleansing is a critical daily skin care step. It removes the dust and dirt that chokes the pores on the skin. Most people do this 2-3 times a day; this is adequate for normal skins. But,for oily skin type a more frequent cleaning is very essential-even 4-5 times a day, using either a soap or some kind of cleansing agent.

  • Always wash your hands clean first. This will prevent the transfer of bacteria to your face
  • Soap and water do tend to remove the impurities but are incapable of removing make up completely, hence proper cleansing is required. Skin experts recommend avoiding soap because of its high pH.
  • There are several alternatives to soap and water cleansing- creams, milks, lotions, foams, oils, gels and liquids.
  • Depending on whether your skin is normal to oily or normal to dry, you should use cleansers and products that are formulated for your specific skin type.
  • Wash face using a gentle cleanser, with fingers, moving in a circular motion.
  • A cotton pad dipped in fresh milk is a cheap but equally effective cleanser.
  • Upwards and outwards movements have frequently been suggested as the right way to apply all kinds of creams to the face. Leave the cleanser on for a minute or two so as to loosen the dirt and make-up.

2. Exfoliation

Exfoliating is the process of removing dead skin cells, which cause the face to look dull. The build up of dead cells can also contribute to blockage of the pores causing acne. Facial scrubs help clean the surface of the skin by removing the dead skins and the dirt mechanically. European women have been using exfoliants for decades. Skin exfoliation is suitable for greasy or normal skin, but should be used with caution on dry or sensitive skin.

  • A granular scrub helps to slough off dead cells from the skin surface.
  • The scrub should be strong without being damaging.
  • If your skin is sensitive, use a synthetic puff or natural sponge.
  • To add a gentle theraputic exfoliation treatment to your bath, add 2 teaspoons of natural sea salt
  • Men are exfoliating their faces every day by shaving. The razor removes the top layer of dead cells every day.

3. Toning

Toning the skin helps remove any residual cleanser or make-up that may have been left behind. A toner also helps restore the natural pH level of the skin, leaves your skin clean, clear and ready to be hydrated. Toning close the pores, tighten the skin, and keep it from being exposed to many of the toxins that are floating in the air or other environmental pollutants.

  • Astringents and toners with glycolic or alpha hydroxy acids work the best for toning the face.
  • For Normal Skin, chop up a small sized fresh cucumber and liquidize it with half a cup of yoghurt.Apply the mixture for 5-10 minutes, and wash it off.
  • For dry skin, use a mild freshener-toner.
  • For Oily Skin whisk one egg white until it thickens, then whisk in 1 tsp of honey. Finally add 1 tsp of lemon juice.Apply to your face and neck avoiding the delicate eye and lip areas
  • The easiest way of applying a toner is to put it on a cotton pad and wipe face in outward and upward strokes.

4. Moisturizing

Well-moisturized skin is soft and supple, reflects a healthy glow and ages less quickly. Moisturisers give a smooth finish to make-up. Putting on a light moisturising cream will make make-up much easier to apply and reduce the risk of dragging the skin.

  • Always use a light moisturizer on your face after cleansing and shaving and don't forget your neck
  • Make sure to apply extra moisturizer to dry skin areas and areas such as elbows and heels.
  • Lips are very delicate and can dry out easily. They need to be protected moisturized to maintain a plump, healthy appearance.
  • Too much moisturizer can lead to clogged pores and blackheads.

C. Health Problem: Muscle Strain (Easy Home Remedies)

  • Muscle strain are relieved when the oil of clove is applied as a poultice near the affected portion.
  • Garlic is effectively used for treating muscle strain. Its anti-inflammatory property accounts for its effectiveness in the treatment of arthritis and rheumatism.
  • A tablespoon of pepper powder fried in sesame oil until it is charred can be applied as an analgesic liniment for muscle strain.

Effective Herbal Cure: Massage the affected area 2-3 times with Arthcare Oil. Massage gently but firmly till the oil gets observed. You will get instant relief within minutes.

D. Ashvagandha - The Herbal Stress Relief

Ashwagandha has many significant benefits, but is best known for its powerful adaptogenic properties, meaning that it helps mind and body adapt better to stress. It nourishes the nerves and improves nerve function to help you maintain calm during stressful situations.

- It is also good for people who do physical labor or exercise a lot, to help the body adapt to physical stress.
- It nourishes all the bodily tissues (Dhatus), including the joints and nerves.
- It is also a powerful Medhya Rasayana, which means that it enhances all three aspects of mind power (Dhi -- comprehension; Dhriti - memory; and Smriti -- recollection).
- Ashwagandha nourishes the crucial mind-body connection and psychoneuro immune response (called PNI). It helps coordinate the mind and senses, as well, which is essential for good quality sleep.

Clinical Studies:

Demonstrated to boost the immune system

Ashwagandha Root demonstrated substantial increases in hemoglobin concentration, red blood cell count and white blood cell count.

Traditional uses confirmed in clinical and laboratory results
All available literature relevant to Ashwagandha was systematically reviewed by researchers from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the Adult Psychopharmacology Program at the National Institute of Mental Health and the San Antonio Chochrane Center to determine its safety and effectiveness. The analysis revealed that traditional uses of Ashwagandha in Ayurveda correspond with [in vitro] clinical and laboratory results, confirming anxiolytic as well as antidepressant activity; toxicity studies report no adverse events.

Mental Problems Improved:
This is perhaps one of the most promising applications of this herb. In a reported study, this herb was given to 30 mental patients suffering from anxiety neurosis in doses of 40 ml/day. (in two equally divided doses.) for one month. At the end of the month, most of the anxiety disorders, panic attacks and similar mood phobias, had disappeared. In trials by American psychiatrists, this herb had been found useful for the treatment of manic depression, alcoholic paranoia, and schizophrenia. Up to 4 capsules were given daily, in between meals, for 45-60 days with very good results. Learning enhancement and memory retention had improved substantially when aswagandha (3 capsules), gotu kola (2 capsules), and ginkgo biloba (2 capsules) were taken regularly on a daily basis.
