For those in search of beauty or lost youth, herbs have always held a special fascination. For the reason that our modern cosmetic industry exploits, the cosmetic use of herbs is a subject to be broached with common sense, a rare attribute in that intent on finding beauty. An early experimenter in the filed of herbal cosmetics was the Greek physician Galen, over 1700 years ago, who is accredited with the invention of cold cream. It was wax and oil of roses. Since Galen’s time the oil of roses has been replaced by almond oil, sunflower oil and liquid paraffin. Synthetic chemical preservatives are now being used instead of alcohol or spirit vinegar.
