Gastritis and its Treatment

Inflammation of the stomach is known as gastritis. It is of several types depending upon the nature of the inflammation, the condition of the mucous membrane and glands. Hydrochloric acid and some other digestive enzymes are secreted by the glands of the stomach. Inflammation of the stomach thus results in the impairment of these secretions leading to indigestion . In Ayurveda ,this condition is also known as urdhvaga amlapitta.

Irregularity in diet ,intake of chilies and spices , anger , anxiety, and worry specially during the time of taking food are responsible for the causation of gastritis. Persons having paittika type of constitution are prone to get this disease It is aggravated when the patient suffers from constipation.


Treatment : Gastritis or
urdhvaga amplapitta is caused by vitiation of pitta.The best therapy for the correction of pitta is purgation . Ghee also plays an important role in alleviating pitta . Therefore , medicated ghee which works as a laxative as well is use for the treatment of this condition.Commonly Sukumara ghrita is used for the treatment of this condition . It is given in a dose of two teaspoonfuls twice daily mixed with a cup of milk on an empty stomach. In the beginning , this may affect the power of digestion . After a day or two , digestion improves and the patient does not experience any difficulty.

Amalaki is the drug of choice for the condition.It is given to the patient in the powder form in a dose of two teaspoonful four times a day.


Diet : Barley , wheat ,rice (preserved for one year),soup of moong dal ,parched rice,cucumber,bitergourd,patola,green banana,banana flour,white pumpkin,pomegranate and cow’s milk are considered to be exceedingly useful for the treatment of this condition.
