Gum Care

Gums are a wonderful patron to our teeth. In the first few years of our lives, they act as a womb for them. Later, after the teeth are born, they allow them a strong foothold. Despite this, hardly anybody gives them the care they deserve.

Across countries and people, periodontal disease or diseased gums is an extremely common problem. On an average, three out of four people over thirty-five years of age, suffer from diseased gums. No wonder then, this causes more loss of teeth than the more infamous dental cavities.

The commonest form of gum disease is a mild inflammation of the gum margins. Known as gingivitis, it is caused by unfriendly bacteria n the teeth and gumline. It leaves the gums red and sore.

If left untreated, the disease soon damages the under-lying bone level deteriorates. Warning bells began to toll. The gums swell up, turn red and start bleeding.

If the disease is still not checked, signs of advanced periodontitis appear. The gums recede further and separate. Pus can develop and lead to bone loss, and the teeth may loosen or fall out. At this stage, the breath begins to reek and the teeth no longer seem to fit together when you bite.

• Rinse swish your moth clean after every meal

• Use a good mouth wash

• Use a soft bristle brush

• Timely treatment
