This is defined as the illness involving the body, thoughts, mood that affects the person’s dietary habit, sleep pattern and behavior. One can't compare the depression as a passing blue mood. It is neither a condition that can be wished away nor a sign of personal weakness. The people who are depressed go vain and can't merely pull themselves together and get better in their work. If this is left untreated, this may last long up to days, weeks, months or even years. Appropriate treatment however, can help most of the people suffering from the depression.
Depression is the most common psychiatric disorder in the present world and also growing cause of concern for many health companies and agencies worldwide due to high economical and social costing. With the treatment 80% of the depressed people come to their normal state.
Depression can occur at any stage of the life, from childhood to youth or old age. This results in number of different factors that may lead to chemical changes in the brain. Inherited predisposition, aging, biological changes, emotional loss, chronic stress, traumatic experience, social isolation etc are most commonly known trigger factors for the depression. In women, irregular menstruation and heavy social responsibilities are well known for the same. Statistics show that at least 16% of the world population is suffering from the depression at any time.
Ayurveda says this as vishaada. This could be due to many reason and all the doshas may get involved. When the things don’t happen the way one wants, the depression happens.
Psychotic depression
Those who suffer from this type of depression start seeing and hearing imaginary sounds, voices, things and visual that don’t exist. One can refer this as hallucinations. These are more common when one is schizophrenic. These hallucinations are not positive and give bad impact on others. The sufferer of this type of depression imagines negative and frightening images and sounds.
Dysthymia
We generally notice many people who just walk around seeming depressed. They are simply sad, at sea, blue or melancholic. It seems that they have been living this life since years. This condition is known as dysthymia. This is the condition in which people are not aware of this but just live with depression as daily routine. They usually go through life feeling dissatisfied, frightened, unimportant and waste. It is quite difficult to enjoy the life for them and they never find life as in interesting period.
Atypical depression
The sufferer is sometime feels the experience of happiness and moments of elation. But that never last long. Symptoms of the atypical depression include oversleeping, weight gain, overeating and fatigue. People who are having atypical depression generally trust that outside events control their mood. These outside events may include attention, praise or success. The episodes of this type of depression can last long for months or through out the life.
Major depression
This slightly defers from the atypical depression. This is the most common forms of the depression. The victims usually walk around with the weight of the whole world on their shoulders…! They always seem disinterested in becoming involved in current or regular happenings and seem convinced that they always be in one unknown hopeless state. There will be lack of interest in routine work, sexual activities and also in appetite. This may turn into the weight loss.
Manic Depression
This type of depression is an emotional disorder showing lots of changing in mood. This may also vary in depression to mania and quietly rapid. This is dangerous as the people who suffer from this depression are susceptible to commit suicide. For them life is a mystery and will remain unsolved till they end it. The strong desire of love, failure to exams or test and inability to solve the family problems lead to manic disorders.
Bipolar depression
This type of depression includes both low and high mood swings. This may have variety or set of symptoms which may not be present in other types of depressions.
