Diet for Stress Management

Stress is a state of mind that can emanate from certain situations. These situations may be a state of anger, panic, anxiety, pressure, frustration, or disagreement. Though different people respond and react differently to same situation, all can be stressed due to different reasons. Stress leaves negative impact on your body and on your mind as well, making you more vulnerable to stressful situations, and hence it keeps on multiplying if not taken care of in time.

Stress is so common in routine; that almost everybody experiences it in one way or the other. You can reduce stress by leading a positive life, having a good diet and by doing some physical exercise. You can even see a doctor if you are not able to cope with it.

A regular diet for stress management is a must to reduce stress. It takes care of your physical well being and doesn’t let stress have negative impact on your body. If your stress is a chronic disease, take it as a serious disease just as you take other ailments. Consult a doctor and take medication, if required. However, discuss your diet with your physician and seek advice on any changes. Any medication for stress management is incomplete if you do not take care of your diet.

If you are leading a stressful life, avoid non-vegetarian diet. A non vegetarian diet may lead to more toxins in your body that do not allow you to relax properly. Also, reduce your intake of spicy or oily food items. Since stress builds up extra toxins in your body which may lead to many diseases, your diet should help you deal with excessive toxins. Visit a local physician and seek one’s opinion if need some medicine is required. Even if you are not recommended any medicine, have a capsule of vitamin B, daily that helps you reduce the stress level in your mind. Research has shown that vitamin C rich foods are very useful diet for stress management. Have citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons regularly. Do not take heavy meals at night. Have small walk or stroll in the garden after the evening meals, as it facilitates proper digestion.

Since stress has a detrimental effect on your body, you feel lack of energy and fatigued. Stress often leads to cramps, so your diet should contain sufficient amount of fiber as well. Fiber maintains proper working of your digestive system and prevents constipation. Have fruits, vegetables, salads and grains as a regular part of your diet. Try having whole fruits rather than fruit juice.

Almost everyone who is stressed experiences headache. In order to prevent stress headaches, you should take proper rest and do some physical exercise to keep yourself fit. Drink eight to ten glasses of water everyday. Most often stress headache also involves a tightening in your neck muscles. Stick to your dietary habits with discipline and make some adjustments in your life style.

How much ratio of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals you should take depends on certain factors such as your age, your level of physical activity, your nature of job and the kind of body health you have. Consider all these factors and see what kind of diet would be good for you. Have well balanced diet that give you all the required nutrients for overall growth of body.

Research has shown that carbohydrates set off the release of a particular substance in the brain that has the property of causing calmness and helps to relax you. A good carbohydrate diet such as boiled potato or white rice is a good option to relieve anxiety. You can also have whole bread and grains for required amount of carbohydrates.

Green and yellow vegetables are a rich source of many important vitamins and minerals that are required by your body. These improve the immunity of your body and help you take control of situations when you tend to feel stressed. Salads offer a good diet for stress relief as these are also rich source of fiber. Reduce your intake of tea, coffee and chocolates. Also stop taking alcohol or drugs as prolonged use of these cause anxiety disorders.

Once you monitor your diet for stress management, you will see the difference in a few days. You feel extra energy and freshness in your body system. A good diet gives you strength to deal with stress. Do some research on internet or read a few books on how good diet can help you cope with stress. As your knowledge widens, you feel more confident and positive to take challenges head on. It changes your overall outlook towards life.

However, diet for stress alone may not be able to solve all the stress related problems. You should develop a sound social support system by sharing your thoughts. It helps you relax your mind.
