Stress affects you physically, mentally, and emotionally. When you tend to remain stressed for long, it becomes a chronic
problem that may lead to serious and complex diseases. Complications of stress are secondary conditions that are caused by continued stress. Most often, the symptoms and complications of stress are used interchangeably, though complications are a sort of after effect of a prolonged stressed state of mind.
Research has shown that stressed people are more prone to cancer and heart related diseases. The complications of stress continue to build up gradually if you are in stress for long time. Theorists say that a since cancer can not be developed in a few days because of a tragedy such as by death of near one in family, the cause of developing cancer can be continued stress. It is quite well known that stress causes many physical and psychological problems, including high blood pressure, reduced immunity, increased alcohol use or drug use, and vulnerability to accidents. Generally people take stress and its complications as a part of life, thinking that it will get better with time. Unfortunately, that never happens unless you make conscious efforts towards dealing with your stress. If you do not get to the root cause of stress, and do not try to avoid it, it may lead to certain serious diseases at a later stage of your life. A few most common complications of stress are as below. High Blood Pressure High blood pressure is a common complication of stress. High blood pressure is often called a silent killer as there are no visible symptoms. It can be serious and may lead to serious heart problems in future.
Sleep Disorders Stress often leads to sleep disorders as well. When individuals are dealing with stressful situations they may find that their sleep habits are disturbed. Some individuals may find that they are unable to sleep while others may find that they sleep for long hours. They do so to avoid the stress situation haunting them. If you are sleeping less, you get easily tired. Your working hours are not productive enough and you get more accident prone. If you are depressed, you may be sleeping for than required ours. Depression and stress are closely related and you should seek medical advice for proper treatment. Eating Disorders Eating disorder is another complication of stress. People who are stressed may also experience change in their eating habits. Either you may be eating too much as you feel that you need more diet to deal with stress or your appetite increases. It can also happen that you start turning away from foods simply because you are stressed and you have lost appetite. You do not feel like eating anything. In either of these situations, you need to have a relook at your diet plan. No doubt that you should look for a regulated diet, it has less to do with quantity but requires attention to the contents of your diet. A well balanced and nutritious diet can help you deal with stress. Stress as Hives It is believed that extreme emotional stress can cause skin reactions including hives. Hives are raised itchy swellings of the skin. These keep on coming out continuously as new ones appear as the old ones disappear on almost 24 to 30 hours. Research done on hundreds of people point to the relation between stress and hives, though it has not been proved scientifically. Complications of Stress especially on Men Many years ago, men were thought to be able to internalize stress unlike women. However, with changing times, the weight of responsibilities on men have increased manifold – at home, at workplace, at society, and at personal level as well. The line that separated men and women in terms of their responsibilities is more blurred than ever and as a result, men are more likely to suffer from chronic stress, as compared to women. Men are often raised as being responsible for running their family, providing financial, social and emotional support. However, the fear of failure in one or more of these aspects causes stress, and prolonged stress becomes a chronic problem. Though men are physically stronger, research and statistics show that they are equally likely to suffer from emotional and behavioral stress as are women. After a certain level of stress, men often suffer from more health risks when they are exposed to recurring and chronic stress causing factors that are not taken care of. These advanced complications of stress may include heart disease, complications with jaw clenching, headaches, and even problems involving sexual performance such as impotence. Women should take care that the man takes healthy and nutritious diet to deal with stress. Apart from this, men should do regular exercise to combat stress and to reduce any possibility of complications of stress.
