Symptoms of diabetes

This varies from types to types.

Diabetes type ONE, which occurs usually in children and adolescents may develop to the person who is forty plus in the age, has symptoms like…

  • Sudden vision changes. Blurred or disturbed vision.
  • Tingling or numbness in the hands or the feet. This increases when one sits in the same posture for long time.
  • Extreme hunger or famish.
  • Sometimes it is unexplained weight loss of the body.
  • Much of the time, person will feel tired.
  • It accompanies with dry skin through out the body especially palms and hands.
  • Frequent micturation is the commonest called as polyuria.
  • Excessive thirst can be found known as polydypsia.
  • Sores and wounds that are slow to heal than the usual.
  • Prone to have more infections than the normal. This is due to decreased body immunity.
  • Sometimes this gives the symptoms like nausea, vomiting or stomach aches.

Diabetes type TWO, which is more common usually doesn’t have symptoms at all. However some of the signs can be identified as having chances of increased sugar in the body.

The type-two diabetes begins with the elevated blood sugar levels and so the loss of glucose in the urine. This high glucose amounts increases the urine out put and can lead to dehydration in some cases. Dehydration results into thirst and water consumption.

Insulin is an anabolic hormone that performs its effect on proteins, carbohydrates and fats in other words, this encourages storage of the protein and the fats. An absolute or relative deficiency of the insulin gradually leads to weight loss despite of increased hunger. That is why people with diabetes are hungry and though they are not nourished properly. Fatigue and laziness come along with diabetes. Fluctuation in the blood glucose levels may be the cause for blurred vision. Extreme elevation in glucose levels may lead to lethargy and finally coma known as “diabetic coma”.

Due to decreased immunity, any scar or wound on the body takes unexpected time to heal allowing microorganisms to settle down and infect the localized area. When this happens to the foot, it is known as “diabetic foot”.

The general symptoms include which can be found in both the diabetes types is polyuria – frequent micturation, thirst and weight loss in initial stage. A person gets tired even after small work. Unrelenting hunger, itching all over the body, skin disorders are not uncommon. Pain and numbness in limbs and the wound that doesn’t heal for long period could be major in diagnosing the condition. There could be visual disturbance like blurry vision.

Ayurveda describes symptoms like tying of hairs and dirtiness all over the body especially nails, ears and genitals are major symptoms. Ants get attracted towards the urine of the diseased. Excessive sweating, thirst and hunger are too described in Ayurveda.

Diagnosing the diabetes

In olden days, the Ayurvedic physicians used to diagnose the patient with diabetes with their tied and dirty hairs and ants getting attracted to their urine. This was because unavailability of diagnostic techniques, machines and methods.

Modern science diagnoses diabetes in very perfect manner assuring the presence of the high blood sugar levels in the body. Here are some of the most in-use diagnostic methods or techniques…

  • An oral glucose tolerance test is measured after you have stayed at least eight hours without eating and two hours after you drink the glucose containing water or drink. This is used to diagnose diabetes or pre-diabetes period. The normal value is 139 mg/dL and below. 140-199 mg/dL is pre diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance and 200 and above is labeled as diabetes.
  • The fasting plasma glucose test is done when one remains at least for eight hours without eating. This test is used to detect pre-diabetes or diabetes. The normal values stand 99 mg/dL and below. Pre-diabetes or impaired fasting glucose values between 100-125 mg/dL and 126 mg/dL and above is confirmed diabetes.

  • The random plasma glucose test is performed irrespective of the food taken or your last meal. As the name suggest, this is a random test and can be carried out any time. This is used to diagnose diabetes and not for pre-diabetes. The random blood glucose level of 200 mg/dL or more and presence of certain symptoms confirms the diabetes.
