Causes of Diarrhea

Modern science believes this to be infection oriented. There are many bacteria and viruses that can cause diarrhea. Certain antibiotics may interfere with intestine micro flora and produce diarrhea.

Sometimes stress and anxiety disturbs the gastro-intestinal functions. Certain food or allergic items irritate the intestines and sequel to that the end product is diarrhea. In children with lactose intolerance may produce diarrhea.

Ayurveda deals this strictly with poor digestive fire and so the power. When one starts eating the incompatible food, junk food, excess food that increases Kapha Dosha may produce diarrhea.

Too much swimming, heavy exercises and carrying over load may produce diarrhea as per Ayurvedic science. Ayurveda does agree to certain stressful conditions that can create diarrhea. Uncooked food items, stale foods, decayed foods and too much milky products may cause diarrhea.

To cope up, the causes of diarrhea can be divided into…

  • Parasites: The parasites can settle in the digestive system through water and food. Some of the parasites like Enatamoeba histoytica, Giardia lambia and Cryptosporidium causes diarrhea.
  • Viral infections: The body gets affected by some viruses like Norwalk virus, Herpes simplex, Rotaviurs, Cytomegalo virus and Viral hepatitis which causes diarrhea.
  • Bacterial infections: There are many types of bacteria namely, Salmonella, Escherichia coli, Campylobacter, Shigella etc., that enter into the body through contaminated water and food may disturb the digestive system and cause diarrhea.
  • Reaction to medicines: Some antibiotics, antacids and the drug that is used for hypertension may have the side effect of diarrhea.
  • Diseases: Diseases like inflammatory bowel syndrome, celiac disease, enteric fever may have diarrhea as symptom.
  • Sensitivity: Some people are sensitive to certain food and beverages. Many of them are unable to digest lactose, the sugar found in milk. Milk causes diarrhea to them. This also depends on the quantity consumed. Like even a healthy man consumes the milk in over quantity, the intestines move rapidly and the situation turns up into diarrhea.

People have tendency to develop the diarrhea after they have surgery of stomach or of the gall bladder. This happens because the food moves quickly through the digestive stomach or the bile secretion is increased in the colon that is followed by diarrhea.

It is seen in many cases that the causes of diarrhea are not known. By the time diarrhea starts and gets treated, the cause remains unknown.

Traveler’s diarrhea is termed when people visit foreign countries and they find change in food, water and climate.
