To begin with, ‘Ciba’ was, perhaps, the first allopathic pharmaceutical company that introduced ‘Serpentiana Tablet’ into the market to control high blood pressure.
Its nomeclation is attributed to Dr. Leonard Rauwolfia, a German physician and botanist. The herb is erect, having a smooth stem. A legendary Ayurvedic authority, charka, in his monumental treatise (charka sanhita) recommended its use. For medicinal purposes, bark and dried roots are utilized.
Fairly larges use of this herb is attributed to its roots having two important alkaloids (viz Serpentine and Ajmaline). Its roots certain fairly large amounts of total alkaloids, apart from containing plenty of starch of resin which, when incinerated, leave back residual ash that consists of manganese traces of iron, silicate, phosphate, potassium carbonate.
It cures insanity, lowers blood pressure, removes insomnia, and dispels hysterical fits and also uriticaria. It also reduces/lowers blood pressure and fever. It is also claimed, though not verified and confirmed, that it facilitates expulsion of the foetus by stimulating contraction of the uterus.
Since the herb has higher properties of inducing sleep, it must not be used in case of infants and children of quieten them, by inducing sleep by the use of this herb or if a patient is having gout or phlegm or has tendency to develop such symptoms, in acute cases of insomnia, due to whichever etiology (causes).
Powder of herb’s root should be given in 0.50 to 1.25 gms with some scented vehicle (say aqua of rose/sandal). As it is no stimulate, a dose 0.25 gms can be given to the sufferer at bed time, to induce sound sleep, while the chronic patients may have a dose each in the morning and evening/at night before retiring to bed.
As for high blood pressure ½ TSP of powder of its root can be taking, thrice daily to quell onslaught of hypertension.
Let it be noted that if insomnia be the cause of hypertension, as both the disorders cannot be segregated from each other—if you have high blood pressure you are, most likely, not going to have sleep (much less a sound sleep) and if you are unable to enjoy a sound sleep you will, mostly likely, find your blood pressure raised.
Let me dispel a myth-both men and woman, can suffer from hysterical disorders, though women are more prone to this disorder. To say that only women suffer from this disorder is total negation of truth, whereas the facts of the matter being that both sexes are equally vulnerable. Give one gram of powdered root, with milk, thrice daily, but continued the treatment until fully recover is obtained.
