The term eczema is derived from a Greek word meaning ‘to boil’. It refers to an inflammation of the skin, which results in the formation of pustules on the skin from which sometimes there is a discharge of clear fluid.
It is the most chronic skin disorder. It is essentially a constitutional disease, resulting from a toxic condition of the system. It is serious during infancy but improves by early adulthood. It causes itching, redness, dryness and flakiness of the skin. It is also known as atopic dermatitis. Most commonly it appears on the hands, wrists, arms, neck, face, upper chest and back of the knees. It is not a contagious disease.
In eczema the skin shows following symptoms:
• Redness
• Swelling
• Itching
• Dryness
• Scaliness
• Tiny blisters or raised rashes
Allergy is the most common cause of eczema. Many women are allergic to specific soaps or detergents that cause eczema on their hands. The allergy may be caused due to various foods also like eggs, peanuts, chocolate, wheat, cow’s milk, potatoes and chicken. The other cause of eczema is the failure of the system to excrete poisons from the body. If the toxic material is not excreted from the body it gives rise to many skin problems like eczema, acne and boils. It may also be caused due to specific diseases like asthma and hay fever, constipation, emotional problems, stress, faulty metabolism; nutritional deficiencies and drug treatment for a longer time are the other main causes of eczema.
