This is the inflammatory reaction of the skin in which there are formation of vesicles, minute blister like raised areas. Later they turn into erythema i.e. redness and swelling. This is followed by papules and crusting of the skin. The whole condition ends with thickening (lichenification) and scaling of the skin.
Eczema look different from person to person. It is more commonly defined as red, dry and extremely itchy patch on the skin. It is very famous saying that the itch that rashes is eczema. This is due to when one scratches the itch, it turns into the rash.
Eczema can occur any part of the body. In infants, it usually occurs on the forehead, cheeks, legs, scalp, neck and forearms. In adults and children this occurs on the face, inside the elbows, knees, ankles, and neck. In certain cases, eczema may ooze. Apart from all these, the condition may appear more scaly, red and dry. Prolonged scratching the localized site, takes on the leathery texture. This is because the skin gets thickened as mentioned above.
Ayurveda believes when the vitiated Doshas spoil twak (skin), rakta (blood), mamsa (muscles) and lasika (lymph) the disease occurs called twak roga (skin diseases) in general.
