Common Name: Garcinia, Kokam Butter Tree, Mangosteen and Brindall berries
Sanskrit and Hindi Names: Vrikshamla
Garcinia also contains great amounts of Vitamin C and has been used as a heart tonic traditionally. Researches suggest that this natural extract may also inhibit the conversion of excess calories to body fat and can be used as a best herb for preventing obesity.
Garcinia , also known as Garcinia cambogia and indica, contains a biologically active compound that is known to inhibit the synthesis of lipids and fatty acids and decrease the formation of LDL and triglycerides.
It tones up gastrointestinal activity. Appetite is also suppressed by promoting synthesis of glycogen. Glycogen is the form of glucose that has been stored in the body and is one of the body's primary sources of energy. The normal way for body’s signal to the brain for not eating anymore as the food is sufficient at an increased glycogen production and storage. The brain, then, sends a signal back to a person that the food is now enough eaten. This simple theory has made Garcinia is a herbal medicine for preventing obesity and cholesterol. It contains significant amounts of Vitamin C, and can be used as a heart tonic and is proven antioxidant.
Garnicia is a well established fat burning agent all over the world and is currently becoming a rage in developed countries and continents such as America, Japan, Europe and many other western nations. It is advised as a dieting aid supported by exercise and a balanced nutritional diet.
Garcinia, when taken over a period of time, can help to slower down the production of fat and to help the body metabolize it more efficiently. Garcinia helsp to increase how much energy the body burns (basal metabolic rate). Garcinia also helps reducing carbohydrate craving and appetite, overall and promotes weight loss during dieting. |

Minimal physical activities and consumption of abundant calorie rich foods are triggering rapid weight gain. It is estimated that roughly one-third of the global adult population is overweight. The incidence of obesity is also rising among children. Childhood obesity is a major public health concern. Obesity has a severe long-term consequence. It is one of the leading causes of several preventable health disorders.
When we eat more than the total calorie needed by the body, the excess calories are converted into fat cells. In the early stage, as the unused calories are converted into fats, the fat cells expand in size to store the excess calories. When the fat cell reaches its maximum size, it could not expand further. To accommodate the extra fats, new fat cells develop. Hence, increase in the size and numbers of fat cells lead to obesity.
Obesity might run in families. Genetics might play a role in triggering obesity. Children of one or both obese parents have a greater risk of becoming obese than offspring of parents with normal body weight. Similar lifestyle in a family might influence the calorie intake and level of physical activities in a family.
Some people overeat to beat depression, boredom, hopelessness and anger. However, this does not mean that every obese or overweight person suffers from emotional disorders.
Women, compared with men, have a greater risk of gaining excess body weight. The greater muscle content in the body of men boosts their metabolism rate, which helps them to burn more calories naturally. The metabolism rate also tends to slow down with age. Hormonal changes that occur in the middle age might trigger weight gain. As we age, we tend to lose muscle mass, which is often compensated by increase in body fat.
Weight gain is also linked to certain medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, Cushing syndrome and polycystic ovarian syndrome. Prolonged intake of antidepressants, steroids and oral contraceptive pills tend to push up the body weight.
Besides your body mass, the distribution of fats in your body plays a key role in determining the risks of developing obesity-induced health disorders. Accumulation of excess fat in the abdomen is especially harmful for the health. Abdominal fat is linked to higher risk of cardiovascular problems, heart attack, stroke, insulin resistance diabetes, high blood pressure, fatty liver and certain cancers. |

Garcinia cambogia plant is a native to India and South East Asia. The small pumpkin-shaped fruit of Garcinia cambogia is used in South Asian cuisines. The yellow, reddish or purple colored rinds of the fruit contain powerful anti-obesity phytochemicals. For centuries, the fruit was recommended by folk healers and Ayruvedic medicine practitioners for suppressing appetite and for aiding weight loss. The fruit helps to make you feel full easily.
Hydroxycitric acid, the main active component present in the rinds of the Garcinia cambogia fruit, prevents weight gain by inhibiting synthesis of fatty acids. It impairs activities of the enzyme ATP citrate lyase that converts the unspent calories into fats. Consumption of Carcinia cambogia foods helps to suppress appetite and facilitates weight loss. (Jena BS, Jayaprakasha GK, Singh RP, Sakariah KK. “Chemistry and biochemistry of (-)-hydroxycitric acid from Garcinia.” J Agric Food Chem. 2002 Jan 2;50(1):10-22).
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, a Purdue University study team found, that mildly overweight females on a low calorie diet who took 400mg of Garcinia cambogia, 30 to 60 minutes before each meal, were able to lose more body weight than participants who took placebo. (Mattes RD, Bormann L. “Effects of (-)(-)hydroxycitric acid on appetite variables.” Physiol Behav. 2000 Oct 1-15;71(1-2):87-94).
Unlike several anti-obesity drugs or supplements, intake of Garcinia cambogia is not associated with adverse side effects. Studies have revealed that hydroxycitric acid, the main anti-obesity agent in Garcinia cambogia stimulates fat loss without modulating the normal functions of the central nervous system. Experimental studies did not reveal any adverse effect of the active anti-obesity constituent in Garcinia cambogia on the major organs. (Downs BW, Bagchi M, Subbaraju GV, Shara MA, Preuss, HG, Bagchi D. “Bioefficacy of a novel calcium-potassium salt of (-)(-)hydroxycitric acid.” Mutat Res. 2005 Nov 11,579(1-2):149-62. 1) A balanced diet and regular exercise are crucial for shedding the extra pounds from your body and maintaining the normal body weight. For better result, you can add a good quality anti-obesity supplement, such as Vrikshamla, to your weight loss program.
2) Clinical trials have revealed that dietary intervention and exercises could cause significant reduction in body weight. Compared to people who rely only on dieting to lose weight, people who combine dieting with exercising lose around 20% more body weight within a year. Moreover, the effect of dieting and exercises helps to sustain the weight loss in the long term. (Curioni CC, Lourenco PM. “Long-term weight loss after diet and exercise: a systematic review.” Int J Obes (Lond). 2005 Oct;29(10):1168-74).
3) To prevent weight gain, your total calorie intake should be equal to your total energy expenditure. In the initial stage of a weight loss program emphasize is given more on a low calorie diet and moderate physical activities to increase calorie expenditure and enable fat metabolism. However, extreme dieting is bad for the health. Consuming less than 1000 calories per day increases the risk of nutritional deficiencies. You might experience fatigue, dizziness and increased sensitivity to cold. To make matters worse, physical discomfort might force you to abandon your weight loss program.
4) To avoid the side effects of extreme dieting, you should gradually reduce your calorie intake. Reduce the proportions of simple sugars and fats in your diet. Replace them with fresh fruits and vegetables. They can easily satisfy your hunger without increasing your calorie intake. Replace the sugary treats and refined carbohydrate products in your diet with whole grain products. Reduce the portion size. Try new ways of cooking healthy meals.
5) Weight loss could be accelerated by adding dietary fibers to the daily diet. Studies have shown that daily consumption of whole-grain cereals such as oat cereals could help to shrink the waist circumference. (Maki KC, Beiseigel JM, Jonnalagadda SS, Gugger CK, Reeves MS, Farmer MV, Kaden VN, Rains TM. “Whole-grain ready-to-eat oat cereal, as part of a dietary program for weight loss, reduces low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in adults with overweight and obesity more than a dietary program including low-fiber control foods.” J Am Diet Assoc. 2010 Feb;110(2):205-14).
6) Green tea and hot chili peppers could help you to lose weight. Phytochemicals known as capsaicin, present in peppers, could boost weight loss by stimulating thermogenesis. Tea catechins and caffeine present in green tea inhibit fat accumulation. (Diepvens K, Westerterp KR, Westerterp-Plantenga MS. “Obesity and thermogenesis related to the consumption of caffeine, ephedrine, capsaicin and green tea.” Am J Physiol Regula Integr Comp Physiol. 2007 Jan;292(1):R77-85).
7) To lose excess weight, you should increase calorie expenditure. This can be achieved by increasing the intensity of physical activities. Brisk walking is one of the most effective methods of losing weight. If you are accustomed to an inactive life, gradually increase the duration and frequency of your physical activities. Add five to ten extra minutes to your workout schedule each week. You would lose more energy by going up a steep slope. Instead of using the elevator, climb stairs. At least 2 ½ hours of aerobic workout each week is beneficial for your health.
8) Even normal household activities such as cleaning the house or gardening would help you to lose the excess flab. Besides reducing your body weight, regular exercises is good for your cardiovascular system. It helps to decrease the blood pressure and harmful lipids. Physical activities strengthen the muscles and the bones. They can also improve your mood. Regular workouts could be considered as a safe option for managing anxiety and depression.
9) Although one might rapidly lose weight in the initial stage of the weight loss program, often the interest in dieting and exercising wanes after six months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is often effective in sustaining your interest in losing weight in the long-term. Studies suggest that obesity is a complex health disorder associated with poor appetite regulation and impaired energy metabolism. Behavioral intervention is necessary for the success of the weight loss strategies. (Lang A, Froelicher ES. “Management of overweight and obesity in adults: behavioral intervention for long-term weight loss and maintenance.” Eur J Cardiovasc Nurs. 2006 Jun;5(2):102-14). |

Garcinia’s effect is to promote the body’s ability to turnover supply of carbohydrates into fat and augment calorie-burning. It is well-known since ancionet times to subdue appetite, slowing down the process of converting of excess carbohydrates into fat. In this process, it will build additional stores of body energy (glucose). Garcinia has been found helpful by reserachers to inhibit fat storage and is active as an appetite suppressant, burning fat via a process called as thermo-genesis. Later on, the lower efficiently compounds glucose and builds up glycogen stores and a result of that there will be less hunger, a reduction in fat and experience of more energy. |

Garcinia indica (dried rind is locally called as ‘kokam’) is an Indian spice used in many parts of the country for making several vegetarian and non-vegetarian ‘curry’ preparations, including the popular ‘Daal’. The fruits are steeped in sugar syrup to make ‘amrutkokam’, a healthy soft drink to relieve sunstroke, which is popular during summer (3, 4 and 5)
Garcinia is traditional home remedy useful treating flatulence, heat strokes and infections (4).
One of the ingredients of kokam, hydroxyl-citric acid (HCA), has been patented for use as a hypo-cholesterolaemic agent. HCA is a potential anti-obesity agent. It helps in suppressing fatty acid synthesis, lipogenesis, and food intake and induces weight loss (6).
Garcinol, a polyisoprenylated benzophenone purified from Garnicia indica fruit rind, displays antioxidant, anti-cancer and anti-ulcer properties (7, 8).
Aside from HCA and garcinol, kokam contains other compounds with potential anti-oxidant properties. These include citric acid, malic acid, polyphenols, carbohydrates (1, 2) anthocyanin pigments and ascorbic acid (3) |
