Gout is a form of arthritis, and is quite painful. People who have gouts may suddenly notice redness and swelling of joints.
Generally, it begins with the big toe and gradually it involves other affected joints as well. Gout is caused when uric acid crystals get deposited in the joint space between two bones.
Studies show that one of the major reasons of gout is poor digestion and a weakened colon. Men are more prone to this disease than women. The symptoms for gout include fever, stress, severe pain in muscle joints, powerlessness to bend fingers, toes, or other small joints. It also includes inflammation of joint tissues.
As with other forms of arthritis, having a regulated diet is very important to control gout. There are certain foods that cause gout to aggravate and you should avoid those.
Gout is caused by an excess of uric acid in the body, which results from the breakdown of purines. Purines are found in many foods, particularly protein rich foods. When you take a purine containing food item, it can raise uric acid levels in the blood which facilitates gout attacks in arthritis patients. This means that as a gout patient, you should avoid purine rich foods that include beer and other alcoholic beverages, y east, liver or kidney meat, legumes, mushrooms, and cauliflower.
There are also certain foods that contain moderate levels of purines. These include poultry – chicken, and duck; and a few vegetables such as asparagus, kidney beans, lentils, lima beans, mushrooms, spinach.
Consult your diet plan with your doctor and if possible avoid all these purine containing foods that cause gout, unless the disease gets in control.
Another major reason, apart from purine that leads to gout and even other forms of arthritis is, animal protein. Since animal products are entirely based on fats and proteins, they do not have any carbohydrates, which produce uric acid in the body. It leads to gout.
If you want to control gout, a regulated diet is as important as any treatment that your take. Apart from avoiding a few food items that are not good for gout patients, you should include those items in your diet that
can actually help you recover quickly. One of the most important conditions is that you should have a vegetarian diet. Ideally, your gout diet should include lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, and uncooked nuts and berries. Do not take white breads and other processed foods. For cooking, use vegetable oil rather than using butter or margarine.
The vegetarian diet will help you clean out the clogged colon, and reduce toxic buildup in the muscles which causes gout. Apart from the content of your diet, you should be very regular in your diet. Do not skip meals because your schedule is cramped. Rather, have 4-5 small meals and not 3 large meals. This ensures more nutrients supplied to more, more frequently. Always discuss any changes in your gout diet with your doctor and seek one’s guidance on what to eat and what to avoid.
Some of the food items that are widely recommended for gout patients are fresh cherries, strawberries, blueberries, and other red-blue berries, bananas, to matoes, kale, cabbage, parsley, green-leafy vegetables, pineapple. Apart from these, your gout diet should also contain vitamin C rich foods such as orange, lime, red cabbage, and tangerines. Study has shown that people who took 4 grams of vitamin C had increased urinary excretion of uric acid. So, apart from vitamin C rich diets, even supplement foods that are recommended for vitamin C can also reduce the risk of gout attacks.
Have lime juice twice a day with half a lime mixed in fresh water. If possible, have one apple after each meal since the malic acid present in apples neutralizes the excess uric acid. Though almost all the protein foods contain purines, you should take some protein rich food items, to supplement the minimum protein requirements for your body.
If you face an acute attack, fasting on orange juice and water the best treatment. After the acute attack subsidies, you may expand your options and have a well balanced all fruits diet. Take this gout diet for three or four days, till it gets in control. Gradually begin having raw vegetables and sprouts and you will feel the reduced symptoms in a few days.
