Sunthi (Ginger), (Zingiber officinalis): Clinically proved as prophylactic of nausea and vomiting associated with motion, sickness, sea sickness and pregnancy. Sunthi is known for its gastrointestinal benefits and as an anti inflammatory. It is extremely useful in the treatment of dyspepsia, flatulence, vomiting and other painful affections of the stomach and the bowels, not accompanied by fever.
Ajwain (Tachyspermum ammi), (Bishop's Weed): The trade name ajwain is based on the Indian name which is derived from adarjawan. Ajwain has long been used in indigenous medicine for the treatment of diarrhoea, dysentery, atonic dyspepsia, cholera, colic, flatulence and indigestion. Steam distillation of crushed seeds yields an essential oil which is valued considerably in medicine on account of the presence of thymol.
Jeera (Cuminum cyminum), (Cumin seeds): Cumin seeds was one of the common spices during the Middle Ages. They are useful in digestive disorders like biliousness, morning sickness, diarrhoea, indigestion.
Hing (Ferula asfoetida), (Asfoetida): Asfoetida contains resin, gum, volatile oil and ash. It is reputed as a drug which expels wind from the stomach and counteracts any spasmodic condition. It is also a nervine stimulant, digestive agent and a sedative.
