Baldness (alopecia), or severe hair loss, is much more common in men than in women. It can result from genetic factors, aging, local skin conditions, and diseases that affect the body generally (systemic diseases). Herbal remedies increase circulation, disinfect the scalp and stimulate hair growth.
Male-pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss affecting men. It's rare in women and children because it depends on the presence of the male hormones (androgens) and levels of these hormones are high in males after puberty. The hair loss usually begins on the sides, near the front, or on the top of the head toward the back.
Female-pattern baldness or female hair loss is less common than male-pattern baldness. Usually, this condition causes the hair to thin in the front, on the sides, or on the crown. It rarely progresses to total hair loss. |

The hair that we see is known as the hair shaft. Improper hair care, exposure to harmful chemicals and pollutants tend to damage the hair shaft, leading to split ends, hair dryness and brittle hair. Excessive hair fall occurs if the hair follicle located underneath the skin is damaged or diseased.
The hair growth cycle is divided into three stages – anagen, catagen and telogen. Anagen phase is the longest phase in the hair growth cycle. During this phase, it takes about 28 days for the length of each hair shaft to increase by 1cm. The maximum length of a hair shaft is determined by the duration of the anagen phase. Usually, the active hair growth phase lasts for two to eight years.
The anagen phase is followed by the catagen phase. This is the transition phase. During this phase of the hair growth cycle, the hair growth stops and the lower end of the hair follicle gradually starts to degenerate. The categen phase normally lasts for two to four weeks. Telogen is the resting stage. At this stage, the hair is loosely attached to the scalp. At the end of the telogen phase, the hair shaft falls naturally.
Depending upon the number of hair follicles on the scalp and the duration of the hair growth cycle, it is normal to lose 50 to 150 hairs each day. However, the actual number of hair a person loses each day is determined by genetic factors, hormonal changes, emotional health, age and gender.
In women, hormonal changes following pregnancy and menopause might increase hair fall. However, most of these changes are reversible. However, permanent hair loss is a common problem in men as they age. Your hair might start thinning in the thirties and forties. A family history of baldness or alopecia might accelerate the process.
In younger men and women, poor nutrition is a common cause of hair loss. It is more common in women suffering from eating disorders such as bulimia or anorexia. Excessive use of hair styling products might damage the hair shafts. Exposure to intense heat while straightening or perm might damage the hair follicle.
Severe stress might trigger hair fall. Excessive hair loss might be a sign of an underlying health disorder such as anemia, uncontrolled diabetes, thyroid malfunction, lupus and polycystic ovary syndrome. |

The inactive oil glands results in dry hair. It is also caused by over exposure to the sun, use of harsh shampoo and chemical treatments. Accumulated oil on the scalp blocks the pores and does not allow the free flow of oil on the surface and makes the hair dry. They give a dull look and become brittle. The dry scalp needs more care and nourishment. The people with dry and dull hair should increase the intake of zinc. Oil massage is also beneficial for dry hair. One should try to avoid hair dryers and other harsh shampoos that make the hair drier. |

The pediculosis causes itching and abrasions on the scalp of the skin. It is one of the most common contagious childhood diseases. Hair tends to loose its natural color with the age but many youngsters are suffering from this problem nowadays and it has become a matter of concern for many. The melanin pigment is responsible for providing color to hair and is synthesized by protein. Lack of this pigment may result in graying of hair. There are many other factors such as inadequate diet, fault living style, and use of chemicals, harsh shampoos and stress. Some chronic health disorders like anemia and constipation also cause premature graying of hair. |

Hair goes gray when melanocytes become depleted. The scalp contains a reservoir of adult stem cells that provide a continuous supply of these color-making cells. But as the body ages these cells become depleted and sometimes begin to develop in the wrong part of the hair follicle. |

The scalp is nothing but the skin on the head. The skin of the scalp is same to the skin elsewhere. Like the body skin, head skin also consists of two layers- the dermis and the epidermis. The hair is composed of a protein called keratin. The rate of hair growth varies from person to person. The growth of hair is always more between the ages of 20-30 and faster in summer as compare to winter. The hair dies and falls after a few years of growth. The average life of hair ranges from 2-4 years. But certain amount of hair is shed daily. The daily average shedding is estimated to be about 50-80 hairs. Hair loss beyond the estimated average indicates one or the other hair problems. Both male and female suffer from hair loss at one or the other part of their lives.
The exact term used for any kind of hair loss is alopecia. Sometimes excess hair loss results in baldness also. Male hair loss and baldness is due to male hormones and often runs in families. It starts after puberty over the temples and the hairline that moves away and results in high forehead. The men usually start losing hair around 20-30’s. Some men have areas on the scalp that are very sensitive to the male sex hormones that circulate in men's blood. The hormones make the hair follicles from which hair grows and shrink. These hair follicles become so small that they cannot replace lost hairs. For men hair loss is male pattern baldness. It is mainly caused by stress, poor nutrition and unclean scalp conditions. When the cause is corrected the hair will start growing again.
Hair loss is different in women. In women hair loss becomes common with the growing age. Some women also suffer from hair loss after delivery due to inadequate nutritious diet. Total blandness is rarely seen in women. There are various other factors such as sex life, age, hair type, heredity and health that affect the hair loss. |

Dandruff can be defined as the excessive flaking of dead skin that forms on the scalp causing unpleasant and irritating condition. Dandruff is made up of bits of dead skin that peel away from the scalp as a result of the effects of metabolism. It is not visible with the naked eye during the early stages of growth but it becomes visible only after getting bigger sized into pieces of dead skin.
Dandruff is of two types; dry dandruff and waxy dandruff. Dry dandruff is also known as pityriasis capitis simplex and waxy dandruff as pityriasis steatoides. Dry dandruff results in itching of the scalp and the white scales are loosely scattered in the hair. In waxy dandruff the white scales gets stick to the scalp. Dandruff is often caused by internal and external causes. Poor circulation of blood, poor hygiene, improper diet, hormonal imbalance and emotional stress are some of the internal causes. The external causes are excessive use of hair sprays and gels, use of harsh and strong shampoos and environmental conditions. It is believed to be infection caused by bacteria and is contagious in nature. The common use of the brushes, combs, towels, soaps and other articles spreads it. |

Split ends are also known as trichoptlosis. The women with long hairs are more likely to suffer from split ends as they avoid regular trim. As the hair grows and reaches a certain length, the protective layer of the hair, the cuticle, becomes damaged and the fibers of the inner layers, the cortex and medulla get flayed. The only remedy is the trimming of the hair on a regular basis. Ignoring the condition makes the situation worse. The splits will continue up the hair shaft causing more damaged hair that will need to be cut off. |

The people with oily skin are more likely to suffer from oily hair. This is mainly due to the over activeness of the sebaceous glands that results in secretion of excess oil. As a result both the scalp and hair becomes oily. The oily hair attracts more dirt and gives a greasy look. It needs washing after every third or fourth day. The oil secretion is also affected by the hormonal imbalance that can be a result of stress, anxiety, faulty living style and high intake of greasy foods. The oily hair is more prone to scalp infections, itching and dandruff, as they get dirty soon after head bath. |

Phyllanthus emblica, commonly known as the Indian gooseberry or amla, is a popular medicinal plant. In Ayurveda, the plant belongs to the Rasayana group of plants. The Rasayana plants assist rejuvenation of diseased cells and restore vigor and vitality. Amla are an important source of vitamin C, minerals, amino acids and antioxidant phytochemicals. Phyllanthus emblica is recommended in Ayurveda for treating inflammation and bacterial infections. (Krishnaveni M, Mirunalini S. “ Therapeutic potential of Phyllanthus emblica (amla): the ayurvedic wonder.” J Basic Clin Physiol Pharmacol. 2010;21(1):93-105). These properties of amla make it an effective hair tonic. Prolonged exposure to pollutants tends to damage the hair, accelerating hair loss. The potent antioxidant phytochemicals and nutrients present in the Phyllanthus emblica fruits help to protect the hair shaft and the scalp from the harmful free radicals. The high vitamin C content in Phyllanthus emblica is especially suitable for maintaining the natural color of the hair. Studies have shown that ascorbic acid or vitamin C might protect the melanin from free radicals released during exposure to bright light. (Chikvaudze E, Khachtryan I. “ESR study of photoinduced free radicals by visible light in hair and the effects of ascorbic acid (vitamin C).” Int J Cosmet Sci. 2011 Aug;33(4):322-7). It might be effective in healing inflammatory scalp conditions that are often associated with hair loss. Moreover, the antibacterial property of the Phyllanthus emblica fruit might help to prevent bacterial infections in the scalp.
In the traditional Indian system of medicine, the rhizome of Nardostachys jatamansi, commonly known as jatamansi, is used for preparing hair growth oil. The antifungal effect of the essential oil of jatamansi might help to reduce dandruff growth. Experimental studies have demonstrated the positive response of jatamansi in stimulating hair growth. (Gottumukkala VR, Annamalai T, Mukhopadhyay T. “Phytochemical investigation and hair growth studies on the rhizomes of Nardostachys jatamansi DC.” Pharmacogn Mag. 2011 Apr;7(26):146-50).
Acacia concinna, commonly known as Shikakai, is traditionally used in the Indian subcontinent as a shampoo and for hair care. Sapopins present in the Shikakai pod produce soap-like foams in aqueous solution, which help to clean the scalp and the hair without damaging or excessively drying the hair shafts. Shikakai inhibits fungal growth on the scalp. Studies have revealed that shikakai oil helps to prevent fungi from penetrating the hair segments. (Bahuguna S, Kushwaha RK. “Influence of different oils on penetration of human hair by fungi.” Int J Cosmet Sci. 1993 Feb;15(1):1-5).
Eclipta alba or bhringraj is a popular herb for promoting hair growth. Oil prepared with bhringraj is widely used in the Indian subcontinent for arresting hair fall and increasing hair growth. The positive effect of Eclipta alba on hair growth has been proved in experimental studies. (Datta K, Singh AT, Mukherjee A, Bhat B, Ramesh B, Burman AC. “Eclipta alba extract with potential for hair growth promoting activity.” J Ethnopharmacol. 2009 Jul 30;124(3):450-6). Topical application of Eclipta alba extracts helps to shorten the time needed for initiating hair growth. It also helps to reduce the time needed for completing hair growth. Moreover, it helps to increase the number of hair follicles, which might benefit people suffering from alopecia. (Roy RK, Thakur M, Dixit VK. “Hair growth promoting activity of Eclipta alba in male albino rats.” Arch Dermatol Res. 2008 Aug;300(7):357-64).
Since antiquity, the Lawsonia inermis leaves extract or henna is used for hair care and for dying the hair. Henna could help to remove lice from the head. (El-Basheir ZM, Fouad MA. “A preliminary pilot survey on head lice, pediculosis in Sharkia Governorate and treatment of lice with natural plant extract.” J Egypt Soc Parasitol. 2002 Dec;32(3):725-36).
Ayurvedic practitioners recommend Gmelina arbora fruit extract for arresting premature graying of hair.
The anti-bacterial activity of mint leaves extract might prevent bacterial and fungal infections of the scalp. (Johnson M, Wesely E, Kavitha M, Uma V. “Antibacterial activity of leaves and inter-nodal callus extracts of Mentha aervensis L.” Asian Pac J Trop Med. 2011 Mar;4(3):196-200; Duerte MC, Figueira GM, Sartoratto A, Rehder VL, Delarmelina C. “Anti-Candida activity of Brazilian medicinal plants.” J Ethnopharmacol. 2005 Feb 28;97(2)305-11). Plants of the Mentha species are rich sources of natural antioxidants. Mint extract might protect the hair from the harmful activities of free radicals. (Ahmad N, Fazal H, Ahmad I, Abbasi BH. “Free radical scavenging (DPPH) potential in nine Mentha species.” Toxicol Ind Health. 2011 Jun 6).
To increase the effectiveness of XYZ Hair Loss Cream further, neem juice (neem svaras) based base is used for preparing the herbal product. Neem helps to heal head lice infestation. (Abdel-Ghaffar F, Al-Qurasishy, Al-Rasheid KA, Mehlhorn H. “Efficacy of a single treatment of head lice with a neem seed extract: an in vivo and in vitro study on nits and motile stages.” Parasitol Res. 2011 Jun 11).
