Appetite suppression is one of the many ways which have been devised for prevention of obesity and related problems as well as to restore normal body weight and thus promote health and well being in obese people. On the other hand, these items provide very little energy in the form of calories which thus prevents obesity. Also, these natural means are very safe in general and free from undesirable side effects. Medical means include the use of drugs for suppression of appetite. These drugs, mainly belonging to the amphetamine group, were first used by the German military during the Second World War in 1945 when food supplies were very short in Germany. They were later used for decreasing or preventing obesity in civilians. Drugs like Sibutramine, Fenfluramine, Phenylpropylamine have been used from time to time with varied efficacy. Their use was rampant until fatal side effects like pulmonary hypertension, heart valve damage and hemorrhagic strokes were found to be associated with their use. These drugs were generally available in tablet form to be taken an hour before meals. Their use produced rapid effects but rebound obesity followed stoppage of the drug.
Surgical ways of appetite suppression include gastric bye pass and laparoscopic gastric banding which provide permanent appetite reduction and lead to weight loss and obesity control.
