Brain tumor is a life-threatening disease and it can affect any age group of people. Brain tumor can be of many types depending upon different factors.
How Brain Tumors affect us
Our central nervous system consisting of spinal cord and brain is responsible for every functioning of the body. If tumor develops in spinal cord or brain, it affects many abilities of our body like speech, memory, movement etc.
Our spinal cord from the lowest part of the brain to the middle of the back acts as the messenger of the body and this part of the body is also known as brain stem.
It has the ability to carry different messages or sensations of the body to the brain.
Types of Brain tumors
Brain tumors can be categorized in many ways:
Depending upon the severity of tumor it can be divided into two types:
Benign brain tumor: Benign tumor is not cancerous. It can only affect the brain or spinal cord when it grows and starts pressing the tissues of brain or spinal cord. This tumor can be removed with the surgery and once it is removed it does not come back.
Malignant brain tumor: When brain tumor is cancerous then it is called malignant brain tumor. This kind of cancer can spread slowly or rapidly. It affects the tissues of the brain or spinal cord. This kind of brain tumor is dangerous and life threatening.
Malignant Brain tumor may not affect the tissues of the brain or spinal cord if it is guarded with the bones of the skull. This kind of tumor is known as encapsulated tumor.
Depending upon the occurrence of the brain tumor it can be divided into two types:
Primary tumor: When tumor develops in the brain or spinal cord then it is called primary brain tumor. There are more than hundred types of primary brain tumors. These tumors can be treated with little treatment or it may take long time to get cured.
Secondary tumor: Secondary tumor, which is also termed as metastasis tumor grows other part of the body and then it gradually spreads to the nervous system. Mainly cancers developed in other parts of the body like melanoma, lung, colon, and breast can spread to the nervous system.
Depending upon the age brain tumor can further be divided in several types:
Symptoms, tendencies, and types of brain tumor are quite different in children from adult.
Tumor develops in children in the cerebellum or brain stem and it affects their movement and balance of the body. Whereas, in adult brain tumor develops upper part of the brain or cerebral cortex affecting their thought, memory etc.
Four types of tumors are found in children:
Medulloblastomas: This cancerous tumor is found in cerebellum and more common in boys than girls. It can be treated with surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
Brain stem gliomas: This is found from the age of 3 years to 10 years. It can be removed by radiation therapy.
Ependymomas: This tumor is found in small cavities called ventricles. To remove this tumor, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery are done.
Astrocytomas: This non-cancerous tumor can be removed by surgery.
