Everybody experiences stress. The terms stressed out and over-stressed have become quite common nowadays. Most individuals associate stress with negative events that have taken place in their lives such as the death of a loved one, financial crisis, loss of job, divorce etc.
But stress doesn’t just arise from unpleasant experiences. It is also associated with physical challenges and the accomplishment of personal goals such as job interview, marriage, getting a promotion, watching a ball game or going out on a date.
This makes it clear that physical or psychological stress producing factors may be pleasant or unpleasant. What matters is the individual’s response towards these stressors. Stress can place immense pressure on an individual’s coping skills and can result in a number of health problems such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, arthritis and cancer. Thus, it is essential for you to take charge of your life and bust stress, the silent killer.
How to bust stress?
The best way to bust stress is by gathering your social support systems and utilizing them to your benefit. Improve your communication skills, exercise regularly, eat nutritious food and improve your sleeping habits.
Man is a social animal and needs the company, support and presence of others. Sharing your fears, joys, frustrations and achievements contributes to the wellbeing of your mind and body.
Maintaining a healthy social network at home, at work or in your community is like a support network you can fall back upon when in distress.
Exercising regularly helps combat stress in a big way. It increases blood circulation, is great for your joints and keeps you fit. Yoga and tai chi are two forms of exercise that combine the physical, mental and emotional aspects of your health. You can consider joining classes and participate in group activities to keep you motivated.
Eating well also increases your chances to deal with stress more effectively. It enhances your self –esteem and self-control and helps keep you in good health. It is essential for you to include all the food groups such as proteins, carbohydrates and fats and vitamins and minerals in your diet. Do not skip your meals, no matter how worked up you are and avoid gorging on junk food, deep fried, fermented, processed and pre-packed foods.
Lack of sleep is both a cause and effect of stress and can result in the deterioration of your mental and physical functioning. It may result in headache, fatigue, illness and inability to concentrate and may also cause hallucinations and accidents. Thus, it is important for you to go to bed at a particular time everyday until it forms a habit with you and seek help if you are unable to sleep well.
