Experimenting with different hair colors is a whole lot of fun. But one must keep in mind that colored hair needs extra care and attention. The chemicals in hair dye tend to damage the hair and if proper care is not applied hair coloring could damage the hair structure. Use shampoos, conditioners and serums that were developed for colored hair. Here are some tips to help protect your colored hair.
Do’s: Colored hair needs to be moisturized and nourished frequently. This is because the chemicals in the hair dye strip your hair of its natural oils. Moisturizing regularly ensures that your hair will remain healthy and that the color will last longer. The best way to restore hair moisture is to use a hot oil treatment.
Warm up an oil of your choice, whether coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil or any other oil that you prefer. Massage this warm oil into your head and leave it on for an hour so. Then wrap a warm towel around your head. This traps the moisture in your hair.
For better results you can wrap a plastic bag over your hair and then wrap a warm towel over it. Afterwards, shampoo and condition your hair. Do this at least twice a week and your hair will retain its color longer and be soft and silky. To make the color last longer you can use tea water, a spoonful of vinegar mixed in water or lemon juice and water as a final rinse.
Don’ts: Try to avoid using a hair dryer as much as possible. If you need to use a blow dryer, use it in the cool mode. Similarly, avoid the use of curling or straightening irons. When in the sun, always cover your head with a hat or scarf or use an umbrella. The strong rays of the sun dry out the hair and the hair color fades faster.
Sometimes the sun bleaches the hair and changes the color. When swimming always wear a cap and wash your hair afterwards to remove chlorine which can damage and bleach your hair. Avoid washing your hair with hard or salty water.
