Women are able to produce offspring because they have hormones called estrogen. Estrogen is the hormone responsible for feminine physical characteristics. That’s why it is possible to say that there is less estrogen in an older woman’s system than younger women. That’s why it is normal for estrogen production to decrease after menopause. In the simplest of terms, when a woman is old, she has fully grown into a woman and while young, the femininity blossoms.
What is atrophic vaginitis?
Femininity presents itself in a variety of ways. One out of a million has the disease called atrophic vaginitis. This disease is primarily caused by a sudden decrease of estrogen. So elder women are less prone to the disease, since there is less estrogen than normal in the postmenopausal stage. Considering this, it can be inferred that most individuals who suffer this ailment tend to be young, especially those who have not yet undergone menopause.
Pregnant women are also at higher risk because their estrogen levels are at such higher levels. After giving birth, there is a notable tendency for estrogen levels to drop lower than normal. Thus, if the body barely adapts to this situation then the woman is likely to develop atrophic vaginitis. The disease actually triggers an inflamed vagina as the organ’s walls are worn down and tissues are recessed.
Symptoms
One unmistakable symptom of atrophic vaginitis is a burning sensation in the vagina. You feel a soreness of the organ and when urinating; the pain is unbearable. During sexual intercourse, there’s an oppressing feeling of pain in the sexual organ. It’s almost as if the individual were losing their virginity all over again, and the women may bleed after intercourse. Irregular vaginal discharge is also notable.
What to do after diagnosis?
It is strongly advised that once these symptoms are observed, the individual consult with a doctor and undergo diagnostic tests. Common treatment for this condition is estrogen replacement therapy. Specific lubricants are also prescribed for the woman to be used during intercourse to ease pain.
