Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. It is highly responsible for death from cancer in women. Breast cancer is the development of malignant cancer cells in the breast. Though it mostly occurs in women, there are cases of male breast cancer too.
Percentage of breast cancer in men is very less. Breast cancer can be cured if it is detected in early stages. Breast cancer can be treated by surgery either the removal of cancerous cell or removal of breast (mastectomy). Radiation therapy, hormonal therapy, chemotherapy are other ways of treating breast cancer.
A lump in or near breast and even in underarms area can be a symptom of breast cancer. Tenderness of nipples is another symptom. If shape or size of breast changes or nipples turn inward, then it could indicate the rise of breast cancer. If skin of breast, nipple or areola becomes red, scaly or swollen then you must need medical examination, as it is a sign of breast cancer. Nipple discharges are another indicator of this deadly cancer.
Breast cancer can be diagnosed by a clinical breast examination. Mammogram is used to find out extent to which cancerous cells have been spread out. Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Biopsy are other methods to diagnose breast cancer.
Chances of breast cancer grow with the age. Elderly women are more prone to this disease. Other most common cause is personal history. If a woman had breast cancer in one breast then the risk is higher that it can occur in the other one.
Family history of breast cancer especially on mother’s side makes one more risked towards this disease. Women having some abnormal cells in their breast have higher risk of breast cancer, as these cells tend to change rapidly compared to the normal ones. Gene changes also cause breast cancer.
Menstrual history of women also has impact on the breast cancer risk in them. Women attaining their puberty early are at higher risk. Those women who give birth to their first child at an older age are also at higher risk.
Women attaining menopause after the age of 55 and women, who have no children have higher risk of breast cancer. Radiation therapy f chest, having hormonal therapy after menopause and more fatty breast cells also increase the risk of breast cancer. Obesity, lack of physical activity and consumption of alcohol are also responsible for it.
