What is cellulite?
Cellulite refers to excess fat deposits in pockets beneath the skins surface. It is characterized by a dimpled appearance of the skin. While cellulite occurs in both males and females, cellulite is more prevalent among woman. It is most notable in certain areas, including the hips, thighs, stomach and buttocks.
Cellulite is also known as orange peel syndrome, cottage cheese skin, the mattress phenomenon, and hail damage. The condition is generally related to being overweight. And yet even thin people can suffer from cellulite.
Cellulite occurs as a result of stretching, breaking down or pulling of the collagen fibers, which connect fat to the skin. This causes a swelling in the fat cells. This disturbance of the collagen fibers causes an upward bulging of the skin surface, which leads to the orange-peel appearance of cellulite.
Hormones are generally believed to play a prevailing role in the formation of cellulite. A high stress lifestyle causes an increase in the catecholamine hormones responsible for cellulite formation. Diet has also been related to the development and amount of cellulite. Poor eating habits in general, excessive dieting, excess amounts of fat, carbohydrates, or salt in the daily diet, or even dehydration can lead to the development of cellulite. Smoking, lack of exercise, and sitting or standing in a single position for longer periods of time can also lead to the formation of cellulite.
Till now, weight loss exercises, massages, wraps, ointments, and surgeries have all been ineffective strategies to eliminate cellulite. Even, liposuction (the process of extracting fat from under the skin) is not recommended as it can lead to further distress and complications for the patient.
The medical community is still divided in whether or not cellulite should be classified as a disease. Many dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons recognize cellulite as a disease, while medical professionals from other areas do not consider cellulite a serious medical condition. Instead, they see cellulite as a normal physical condition.
Tips to avoid cellulite:
• Healthy dietary habits (increase the intake of fruits, vegetables, and fibers in the daily diet)
• Increase the intake of fluids
• Exercise regularly
• Utilize proper weight management strategies (avoid ‘fad’ dieting)
• A strict prohibition of cigarettes
