Preventing infections during the period of pregnancy is one of the biggest challenges for you, your family and your supervising doctor. It is not impossible to avoid infections but you need to understand that you and your baby remain at a risk of acquiring infection all the time.
The real issue is that during pregnancy even small infections become a cause of major disorders threatening the health of a pregnant woman and the baby. Here is a small example. You are never supposed to drink non-pasteurized milk during pregnancy. It appears to be a trivial point but goes a long way. Drinking non-pasteurized milk can result in infection for you and your baby inside your womb.
Similarly, you have to build up your immunity towards common cold and flu. In the first place, you are not expected to expose yourself to varying temperature.
For instance, avoid getting out of your air-conditioned car when there is exactly the opposite climate outside. The point is that you have to avoid sudden shifts leading from cold to heat and dry to wet, and vice versa.
In this case, what you can do is that you can get your car air-conditioner off some minutes before you are expected to reach your destination. The same applies to getting out of an air-conditioned shopping mall or any other place and exposing yourself to dry and hot weather.
Actually if you get common cold or a headache, you need to have certain treatments and it is always better that you keep yourself away from any such medications during pregnancy.
Also, in summers and rainy season, the incidence of acquiring viral infections increases quite substantially.
In order to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of viral fever, you have to be away from crowded places. This includes busy places such as hotels and restaurants, crowded malls, cinema halls, departmental stores, hospitals and clinics, etc.
If it is necessary to visit these places, go during the minimum rush hours. Like at many places, you will find very less crowd during afternoons or morning hours. While taking appointment with your doctor, ensure that you are among the very first people, thus avoiding crowd.
