Effects of Sleep on Health

Research shows that those who work in night shifts have a greater risk of colon and breast cancer. Being exposed to light during night alters the levels of melatonin. Melatonin helps induce sleep and also fights against cancer.

Sleep deprivation causes the body to get stressed. The brain sends out signals of high alert which results in high blood pressure and production of stress hormones. Stress hormones further make it difficult for you to sleep.

Higher stress hormones in the body raise the level of inflammation which adds to the risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

Though the connection of dreams and sleep is not fully understood but during sleep memory consolidation occurs. When the body rests during sleep the processes the data collected during the day. This time is important for the brain to make analyze events, feelings and memories. Thus adequate sleep helps in improving memory and keeping you alert.

Less sleep is also linked to being overweight. Sleep has an effect on the balance of hormones that regulate appetite.
