Exfoliate Your Face!

As the years pass by, exfoliation becomes more and more important when taking care of your face. New skin cells are constantly being generated, shedding off the old, dead cells. Those same dead cells don’t disappear, though. They stick around on the top layer of your skin. The older you get, the slower this process of skin regeneration becomes, leaving your skin looking dull for longer and longer periods of time.

You only need to exfoliate your face twice a week in your 20s, but when you hit 30, it’s time to amp it up. You should start exfoliating daily, or every other day if your schedule is truly hectic. Adding it to your regular routine can help you keep track, exfoliate between your cleansing and toning. The next day, skip the exfoliation. If you’re able to find an exfoliating cleanser, you can get two steps done at the same time!

You could consider microdermabrasion when you hit your 40s. This treatment deeply exfoliates your skin using tiny abrasive crystals, removing dead tissue, and encouraging regeneration and revitalization of your skin cells. Five to eight treatments can do wonders for your skin in your 40s. At 50, you might want to try a chemical peel.

Make sure your skin is damp when you apply an exfoliating scrub after your cleansing, and always scrub with gentle and slow circular motions. Don’t scrub roughly. You might cause more damage. You should steam your face once a week, exfoliating with a scrub right afterwards. A mud mask left on for 10 minutes after exfoliation will help nourish the skin. Never use hot water, because it will suck the moisture out of your face. Stick with cool or lukewarm water for the best results. Tone and moisturize to complete the treatment, making your skin truly shine.

Blackheads are caused by dead cells and oils clogging the pores. Exfoliation can prevent these nasty blemishes from forming. It cleans away all those clogging particles, leaving your pores clear and blackhead free.

For an easy at-home exfoliating mask, mix together one teaspoon of granulated sugar, one teaspoon of honey and one teaspoon of plain, unflavored yogurt and apply the mixture directly to your face. Soft skin is the result when you wash away the mask after 10 minutes.

Moisturizing is important after exfoliation, because the process dries out your skin. With those top layers of dead tissue and dirt gone, your moisturizer will penetrate more deeply, giving you an incredibly fresh and smooth face.
