Finding a Hairstyle for Your Face

When we shop for clothing we select colors and styles that suit our body. The same consideration should be given when selecting a new hairstyle. If you are looking for a new hairstyle, you need to take into consideration the shape of your face. Faces come in five shapes: oval, square, triangle, upside-down triangle, or round. Now, the trick is figuring out what shape face you have.

Oval Face
An oval face has wide cheekbones and a narrower forehead and jaw. The face is widest at the cheeks and tapers down towards the forehead and chin. An oval face is able to wear practically any hairstyle.

Square Face
If your forehead and jaw are wide and somewhat blocky looking, then you have a square face. A square face can alternate between wide, or square, and narrow, or rectangular. If you have a square face that is wide across the face then you should select a hairstyle that adds more volume to the top of the head and more length at the bottom. Stay away from hairstyles that add volume to the sides of the face. You may even want to add some bangs to soften the sides of the face.

Triangular Face
If your face is narrow at the top and wider near your chin, then you have a triangular face. Women with triangular faces look better with short hairstyles that have volume. Hairstyles that are short, layered or curly will help balance out the narrow forehead on top with the wider jaw line on the bottom. If your face has a narrower chin and wider forehead then you have an inverted triangle shaped face. This facial style is best suited for short, blunt haircuts that include bangs.

Round Face
If your face looks like a full moon then you obviously have a round face. Round faces are smooth and do not contour sharply in at the cheekbones, forehead or chin. If you have a round face you should try styles that add volume to the top or length to the bottom to make the face look longer. Layered looks work best.
