Health Benefits Of Aromatic Nutmeg




Nutmeg is known as Myristica Fragrans under its botanical name and belongs to the family of Myristicaceae. It is commonly known as Jatiphala and Nux Moschata and is native to the Molucca islands, Banda islands and the Malay Archipelago. It is widely cultivated in Indonesia, West Indies, French Guyana and India. Nutmeg is known to contain volatile oil, pentosans, pectin, furfural and starch. It comprises of 10% of essential oil and a chemical compound known as Myristicin that is responsible for the hallucinogenic effect of the herb.

Health benefits of Nutmeg:
Nutmeg is valued for its powerful stimulant, carminative, astringent, anti-inflammatory and stomachic properties and is widely recommended for the treatment of a number of ailments such as flatulence, nausea, vomiting, dysentery and spasms. This aromatic, warming and resinous spice is used in remedies for treating diarrhea, malaria, sciatica and rheumatism. It is known to be an excellent tonic for the stomach and boosts digestion and relieves muscle spasms, abdominal distention, colic, bloating and diarrhea and battles dehydration.

This bitter, astringent and spicy herb is also used to treat insomnia and an array of skin conditions such as eczema. It is an excellent off-the-shelf remedy for toothache and abdominal pain and is also known to relieve rheumatic pains. Ayurveda also recommends nutmeg for treating premature ejaculation, urinary incontinence and weak digestion.

The essential oil of Nutmeg is known to have a psychotropic effect and stimulates the mind. Nutmeg butter is used as a mild stimulant and is a primary ingredient of ointments, plasters and hair lotions. It is also applied topically to combat rheumatism, sprains and paralysis.

However, as a caution you must remember to consume nutmeg in small quantities as large doses of this herb may result in toxicity causing disorientation, double vision and even convulsions.
