Health Hazards Of Cigarette Smoking

Smoking is considered to be one of the worst habits anyone can get hooked on to. As per statistics, around 1100 Americans die every day because of smoking and on a global scale tobacco is known to kill one person every 10 seconds. It is estimated that one in every four American adults is a smoker and even nonsmokers suffer on account of those who smoke.

Cigarette Smoking is injurious to health:
Tobacco smoke contains hundreds of damaging chemicals that are known to cause deadly diseases like cancer. It also contains poisonous substances such as arsenic. Cigarettes contain nicotine which is not only a psychoactive addictive drug but can also be poisonous in high doses and may result in death.

When a person begins to smoke he/she suffers from mild symptoms of nicotine poisoning such as rapid pulse, faintness, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, clammy skin and diarrhea. The affect of nicotine tends to vary on smokers depending upon the size of dose and nicotine tolerance. Nicotine can either tranquilize or excite the nervous system depending upon the amount consumed.

Nicotine tends to stimulate the cerebral cortex in the brain as well as the adrenaline glands. It also inhibits the formation of urine and constricts the blood vessels. It increases heart rate and blood pressure and is known to suppress hunger.

Smoking is a dangerous habit that is known to cause various diseases. Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most widespread cause of death for cigarette smokers and can result in the sudden unexpected death of an individual who smokes. Evidence reveals that smokers have a 70% higher death rate from CHD than those who do not smoke.

Cigarette smoking is also the main cause of lung cancer. As per research, a chemical substance in cigarette smoke called Benzo (a) pyrene is known to cause genetic mutations in lung cells that are identical to cancer cells.

Individuals smoking about 2 or more packs of cigarettes on a daily basis are 12 – 25 times at a greater risk of developing lung cancer than nonsmokers. Smoking also increases the risk of developing other types of cancers such as that of the pharynx, mouth, liver, kidneys, stomach, colon and trachea.

The lungs of a smoker are exposed to highly toxic chemicals and are constantly under severe stress in order to function properly. This can cause a disease known as Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease that can damage the lung function of the affected individual permanently.

Other than this, smoking also results in premature ageing, appearance of wrinkles, hair loss, tooth and gum decay and allergies. It also wrecks havoc on the Immune System and may cause impotence.

If a woman smokes during pregnancy, her chances of having a miscarriage are doubled and she is also at an increased risk of having an ectopic pregnancy. Other than this smoking during pregnancy can result in low birth weight babies, still births and developmental defects.
