How Can Cancer Be Prevented?
Cancer is the abnormal and unrestrained growth of cells which if not treated can cause the death of the affected individual. There are various types of cancers such as breast cancer, skin cancer, lung cancer, colon and rectal cancer, prostrate cancer, cervical cancer, uterine cancer, endometrial cancer and cancers of the female reproductive tract.
The early Greek physicians had no idea of the cause of cancerous tumors and their true nature but they did discover the resemblance of certain tumors to crabs which was a hard mass having claw-like extensions.
Today, though most of the scientists know a great deal about this yet the word ‘cancer’ carries a reputation as an alien present in the body that is capable of causing great harm.
Tips to prevent cancer:
Cancer might be a deadly disease but with proper care and lifestyle changes you can certainly prevent it.
Food: As per research, there is a strong link between disease and diet. High intake of fats, less of fibrous foods such as green vegetables and fruits and lack of exercise are some of the major causes of cancer.
A diet which is high in saturated fats found in red meat contributes to the development of colon and prostrate and other types of cancers. High intake of fibrous foods reduces the rate of cancer.
Dietary fats stimulate the production of bile acids which are necessary to break and digest material in the colon. These bile acids remove layers of cells from the intestinal epithelium which are replaced by the growth of new cells.
These newly formed and rapidly growing cells are susceptible to carcinogens or cells causing cancer. It has been observed that certain animal fat we consume may contain fat soluble synthetic pesticides like dioxin and PCBs that are themselves carcinogenic.
On the other hand, the vegetarian diet is typically low in fat and high in insoluble fiber and research tells us that vegetarians have a low rate of colon cancer. Thus, it is essential for one to include dietary fiber in food in order to prevent cancer.
No alcohol and tobacco: Avoid having alcohol as it increases the chances of developing breast cancer as well as various other types of cancers. Both alcohol and tobacco are risk factors for oral cancer and when used in combination with each other the carcinogenic effect of both substances tends to multiply.
It has been observed that those who regularly consume alcohol and tobacco have a 15 times greater risk for developing oral cancer than those individuals who do not drink or smoke.
Anti-carcinogens: Some dietary compounds called anti-carcinogens have the ability to directly act against carcinogens which stop the development and spread of cancer.
Some essential nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and vitamin A act as natural anti-carcinogens and help block the initiation of cancer owing to their antioxidant properties.
An additional protection against some cancers can also be provided by calcium which stops the growth of cells in the large intestine, thereby reducing the spread of cancerous cells.
Exercise: Sedentary lifestyles and increased stress levels of the body leave no scope for physical activity that plays a vital role in reducing the risk of cancer, particularly colon cancer.
Exercise speeds the movement of food through the digestive tract and strengthens the immune function, thereby decreasing the level of blood fat. Exercise also helps prevent obesity which is a high risk factor for the development of cancer.
