How To Know If You Have A Healthy Weight?

Being overweight or underweight can be a real problem, particularly if it creates health issues. Thus, it is important for you to know if you have a healthy weight or not so that you can take timely precautions and gain or shed weight accordingly.

The shape of our body and size depends on various factors ranging from heredity, eating habits, exercise, lifestyle patterns, hormones and other medical conditions.

There are many perceptions of an ‘ideal’ body in our minds. Most of us wish we had a body like one of those gorgeous ramp models. But while we can change the amount of fat or muscle mass on our body, we cannot change our frame.

Successful weight management begins with acceptance. It is essential for you to accept your body frame because you were born with it.  Your next step would be to try and achieve a healthy weight within your limits.

Healthy Weight Management and you:
Health professionals from across the world use various methods to determine if an individual’s weight is healthy or if he/she is overweight or underweight. These include Body mass Index (BMI), Body fat percentage and Waist-to-Hip Ratio.

BMI: This involves the calculation of the ratio of weight to height. Here you need to make a note of your weight in pounds and measure your height in inches. Then multiply your weight by 703 and divide the acquired figure by your height squared.

Body fat percentage: A device known as skin fold caliper is used to measure body fat. For non-athletes healthy body fat percentages are 15-19% for males and 20-25% for females.

Individuals with percentages above these figures are considered to be obese. Body fat percentage lower than 5-12% in males and 10-12% in females indicates an eating disorder.

Waist-to-Hip Ratio: Health professionals divide all individuals in two groups – Apples and Pears based on their waist-to-hip ratio. Adults with apple-like shapes carry maximum body fat above the abdomen, whereas those with pear-like shapes carry it on their thighs and hips. While apples are at a higher risk for developing health complications they are also capable of shedding excess body weight more easily than pears.

In order to find out of you are a pear or an apple, stand absolutely relaxed and measure your waist. Then measure your hips where they are the largest and divide the waist measurement with the hip measurement. Adult women should have a ratio no higher than 0:80 and men should have it no higher than 0:95.
