How to Prevent Diaper Rash?

Diaper rash is redness or inflammation of the thighs and buttocks of babies. It is caused by the prolonged exposure to a diaper that is moist with urine or soiled with stool. Other factors that can cause diaper rash are hot and humid weather, skin allergies, contact with an irritating substance in certain disposable wipes or diapers, detergents, creames and lotions, tight fitting diapers, etc. Diaper rash is very itchy and painful for the baby but it can be prevented by following simple home remedies:

Soiled diapers are a perfect breeding ground for yeast, bacteria and fungus. Let your baby go bare –bottomed for a few hours in a day. So, there is supply and circulation of fresh air.

Check the baby’s diapers at regular intervals. If soiled, change it as soon as possible to avoid a rash. Rinse baby’s bottom with water and pat it dry with soft towel or tissue. Leave your baby bare bottomed for sometime before putting on a new diaper. Always use best quality, good absorbing diaper as this can reduce the chances of diaper rash.

Avoid using commercial baby-wipes and soap. In some babies, baby wipes can lead to skin irritation as they contain harsh amount of alcohol. Use water, mild soap and soft wash cloth to clean your babies’ bottom. If your baby already has rashes avoid using soap as it can cause irritation to the baby.

Apply a thin layer of diaper-rash cream ointment or gel containing zinc oxide, every time you change your babies’ diapers. It helps protect the diaper area from the irritating effects of urine and feces. If your baby has a diaper rash, apply only a thin layer of the ointment.

Always use baby products such as, soaps, shampoos, creams, and ointments particularly designed for use on baby’s delicate skin. Wash your babies’  diapers and clothes, separately from those of other household members, with a laundry soap specifically designed for babies.

Avoid using talcum powder or cornstarch on the babies’ bottom. Inhaled talcum powder can irritate a baby’s lungs and cornstarch can cause yeast infection. Doctors no longer recommend their use.

If you use cloth diapers, wash them with detergents that don’t contain irritants. Do not bleach the diapers.

If a rash is present avoid tight fitting diapers. They can cause skin irritation and block the circulation of air. So the diaper should be worn appropriately. Use larger sized diapers until the rash goes away.
