Identifying Autism
There are different ways of detecting the condition of autism in a baby. While most children who suffer from autism show the symptoms right from their birth, it is very difficult to understand them till the child grows up a bit. There are cases where child shows the signs of autism after some time and this can happen till the age of three years.
One of the first signs of detecting autism starts with social development. As a parent, you have to observe how your child responds to touch, voice or sound. In the initial years of the child, it might be very difficult to observe the thin line between shyness and autism, but actually they are very different.
A shy child may not respond to people outside but remains responsive to his parents and family members. A child suffering from autism may not even respond to his parents moves.
The child won’t make eye contact with you and may not begin conversation. He may become aggressive at times and without much of reason. This can be sporadic and unexpected. Such children won’t make friends and prefer to remain silent all the time.
Their silence will be over and above what a shy child practices. If you place him along with other children of his age, his behavior will be identically different from others. He would not mix up with them and tend to avoid them.
Their communication and playing habits will be differing from one another. Such child may put too much of emphasis on any ordinary thing or event, and do not pay any heed to unusual events. That is how, his behavior will be different from what is expected generally. The child won’t respond to usual learning process in the school and at the home.
However, there are chances that he is learning things but not responding to them as other children usually do.
As far as physical growth is concerned, he may be at par with any other child. The most striking difference is about communication and social development, and that becomes the cause of concern for parents.
