Newborn babies often come across digestive ailments and constipation is amongst the major one. Under this, babies suffer from infrequent and very difficult movement in their bowels. This ailment can be a result of lack of water and other fluids in their routine diet.
Also there might be a poor coordination between various nerves and muscles of the colon and the bowel. The normal frequency of excreta removal in babies should happen on a daily basis. Normally, a newborn passes stool from one to three times a day.
Many times, newborn babies do not pass stools for two to three days but this should be taken under observation and this should not happen on a regular basis.
You should keep a check on the nature of stool your baby passes. If it is unusually hard or cannot be taken as normal, your child is facing some problem, possibly constipation.
Your baby requires certain amount of fluids in the body, in order to continue with a normal digestive problem. Milk compatibility is yet another major factor that can result in constipation among infants.
This problem may happen when a child switches from breastfeeding to packaged food and supplements. A change in feeding pattern is undoubtedly the major reason causing constipation.
If you are breastfeeding your child, any digestion related problem will directly affect your child also. Therefore, you are required to keep a close eye over your diet pattern.
In the other case, you have to ensure that your child is taking sufficient amount of fluids during the day, in order to avoid constipation. You should also feed him fruit and vegetable juices to keep his body well hydrated. This also helps his digestive system tremendously.
You can also think of giving a gentle massage on your baby’s abdomen. Taking some oil for this purpose is also a good idea. Your baby will feel relaxed and may be able to build up sufficient pressure to release the waste. Remember that a persistent constipation can later translate in diseases such as hypothyroidism, meconium ileus, etc.
