Maintaining Your Nails




Nails are a very important part of our bodies. Most people tend to neglect their nails, particularly their toenails. 

Keeping the nails clean: The most important thing to do is to clean your nails and moisturize them every day.  This will keep them healthy and prevent cracking and chipping of the nails. Cut your nails on a regular basis. If you are growing them out, make sure that dirt does not accumulate and also keep them filed, shaped and neatly polished.

Managing the cuticle: The cuticle is said to be the most important part of the nail.  If you remove the cuticle, nail growth is negatively affected and if you let the cuticle grow too much it restricts nail growth.  The cuticle should always be trimmed and well maintained.  Creams and lotions that have been especially developed for the cuticles are recommended.

Afterwards take a cuticle stick and gently push the cuticles back. Take care not to push too hard or you will damage the cuticles. The cuticle is a protective layer between the dead part of the nail and the part of the nail that creates new cells.  It is very important and extra care should be taken.

Eating healthy foods: The food that you eat plays a vital role in nail health. Protein rich foods like fish and eggs, and soya rich foods help promote nail growth and strength.  Food items like liver, whole grains, sulphur rich foods like apples, grapes, onions, garlic, asparagus, and cucumbers are also recommended.

Foods rich in essential fatty acids like nuts, seeds, tuna and salmon make the nails look shiny, prevent dryness and make the nails softer and less brittle.

Protecting your nails: Use appropriate tools for the projects you are undertaking and do not misuse your nails. You should not use your fingernails to remove box lids, remove dirt from corners, clean ears, peel stickers off of new products, or push cuticles back.  Also use appropriate healthcare products for your nails and do not opt for anything available in your home that happens to be convenient.
