Menstrual Problems

Menstrual problem is a common problem among women of all ages. Menstrual problems begin at the early adolescent age just before the beginning of periods and continue for the first few years of puberty. However in some cases menstrual problems continue throughout one’s life till one reaches menopause.

There can be various kinds of problems related to menstruation. PMS or Pre Menstrual syndrome is the commonest of problems and include irritation, back pain, cramps in the thigh, sore breasts, headache depression, difficulty in concentration and several other symptoms. This occurs just before the beginning of periods and stops after the flow has begun. PMS occurs because of the hormonal changes that the body undergoes during puberty and also during each time periods occur.

Problems like stomach cramps, and irregular periods are also common among young girls. Abdominal cramps are caused by a hormone called prostaglandin which causes the uterus to contract. Cramps occur generally on the first day of the period and last for a day or two. Irregular periods occur during the first 2-3 yrs of periods. This happens because periods cause a lot of hormonal changes in the body and it takes around 3 yrs for the body to get used to those changes.

Such problems are not real problems and one need not worry about them unless the cramps or pains are really bad and hamper one’s normal routines. But problems like Amenorrhea (the Absence of Periods), Menorrhagia (extremely heavy, prolonged periods) and Dysmenorrhea (extremely painful periods) must draw one’s concern.

Amenorrhea (the Absence of Periods)

Amenorrhea is the condition when the body fails to start menstruation. Parents must consult a doctor if their daughter does not start her periods even at the age of 16 yrs. There can be several reasons for amenorrhea. Losing excessive weight, improper intake of proper vitamins and minerals in one’s diet, over-stress, thyroid conditions and ovarian cysts could be a few of the reasons. Pregnancy is the most common cause of secondary amenorrhea.

Menorrhagia (extremely heavy, prolonged periods)

Menorrhagia is the problem of excessive bleeding. Though not a common problem among teenagers, yet those few who suffer from it find it difficult to attend school or any social gathering due to excessive bleeding which they are unable to control. Menorrhagia occurs due to the imbalance of estrogen and progesterone in the body. Thyroid problem, clotting disorders and vagina infection can also cause Menorrhagia.

Dysmenorrhea (extremely painful periods)

Pain during periods is common but if the pain is unbearable and continues for more than 2-3 days, then it is a matter of concern. Dysmenorrhea is caused by the hormone prostaglandin, which also causes nausea, vomiting and headaches. Excessive pain can also occur because of endometriosis.  Such conditions call for a doctor.
