Premenstrual Syndrome: Sort Fact From Fiction

Premenstrual syndrome is also referred to as PMS and is known to occur before menstruation. Research tells us that most menstruating women are affected by it and you just have to be lucky to be able to dodge it. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists around 20-40% women experience some form of premenstrual difficulties. Of these, 5% women are severely affected.

What are the symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome?
Research tells us that there are over 150 different symptoms associated with Premenstrual syndrome. These symptoms tend to begin anytime after ovulation which generally occurs 14 days before the beginning of menstruation.

It is often marked by acne, constipation, swelling and tenderness in the breasts, bloating, craving for certain foods, particularly those high in sugar or salt, constipation, migraine, swollen hands and feet, increased thirst, irritability, depression, nausea, anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, mood swings, unexplained sadness and uncontrolled crying.

Identifying the exact cause:
The exact cause of Premenstrual syndrome is unknown, but most physicians and doctors believe that the hormonal fluctuations that occur at this time are the main culprits responsible for it. However, your diet, intake of certain medications, stress levels and emotional state can also play a major role in the development of these symptoms.

The biggest plight faced by physicians when it comes to diagnosing these symptoms is the identification of the exact cause. This is why it is extremely difficult for one to determine who is and who is not susceptible to PMS. Often, other medical conditions can also mimic these symptoms. For instance, diabetes can result in increased thirst and appetite, emotional disorders can be misunderstood for PMS mood swings, fibrocystic breast changes can cause pain in the breasts etc.

Treatment of Premenstrual Syndrome:
The first and foremost step towards treatment is to confirm that your symptoms are not being caused by any underlying organic disease. For this, you might need to undergo some blood and urine tests.

Simple changes in your lifestyle, eating habits and stress control can help alleviate the symptoms of Premenstrual syndrome. Sleeping well and exercising regularly also helps enhance the overall fitness level of your body and keeps you in good shape.

Caffeine is known to trigger and even worsen the symptoms of PMS. Thus, it is advisable for you to cut down on all those caffeine rich foods such as coffee, tea, chocolates and other beverages containing caffeine. Alcohol consumption can also aggravate your condition as it interferes with the metabolism of carbohydrates and must be avoided. Reduce your intake of sugar and salt and quit smoking if you are looking to beat PMS.
