Pubic Lice- A Sexually Transmitted ParasiteS
Pubic lice are one of the most contagious of all sexually transmitted diseases (STD). These wingless insects with six legs and a crabs – like appearance are found clinging to pubic hair and nourish on human blood.
Research tells us that if one of the sexual partners is infected with pubic lice, the other partner has a 95% chance of contracting it. The worst part is that pubic lice can also be contracted from used towels and dirty bed linen. It however cannot be contracted from toilet seats.
The female pubic lice lays about 50 eggs called nits that remain attached to the hair strands. The lifespan of pubic lice is 25-30 days on average. Having multiple sexual partners is the highest risk factor for contracting pubic lice.
Symptoms of Pubic lice:
Pubic lice are visible with the naked eye. They also tend to cause bluish marks where they bite. These marks can be seen on the thighs or pubic area. Pubic lice cause a great deal of itching and allergic reactions. They can also be found on other hairy areas of the body such as the armpits, eyelashes, beard etc.
The parasite known to cause pubic lice is Phthirus pubis. It takes about 7-10 days for the eggs laid by the pubic lice to hatch and it may take around 2 weeks to a month for you to detect any changes depending upon the number of lice you have contracted.
Treatment and prevention for pubic lice:
There are various treatment options available to get rid of pubic lice. It is not necessary for you to shave off the pubic hair in order to smother the parasites. You can apply 1% lindane shampoo (Kwell) for about 4 minutes and wash off. But individuals suffering from extreme dermatitis should avoid using lindane.
Another medication is a cream rinse called Rid that helps treat pubic lice. In case the lice cling to the eyelashes, you can use a pair of tweezers to remove the nits or apply Vaseline over the ends of the lashes.
Using condoms does not offer protection from pubic lice. The best methods of prevention are to maintain proper hygiene, change the bed linen regularly and avoid using or sharing dirty clothes and towels with others.
