Rest and Muscle Building

It is contrary to what you think you need to do to build muscle. Most of us think the more you workout the more muscle you build, but that is not how it works. Muscle is actually growing when your body is resting not working out.

When you are working out the body stretches and tears muscles. When you are at rest it is healing and building the muscle tissue. The muscles will not get bigger without enough rest.

How much is enough rest? Hard gainers may need more rest then others. These are the skinny people who have trouble gaining weight. They may just workout three times a week. For their body to grow muscles they need more rest.

Other bodybuilders may workout more frequently but you should always have a 24 hour break between workouts for your muscles to rest.

Rest includes sleep. You should try and get eight hours of sleep per night. The hard gainer should not exercise at all during resting periods. Other bodybuilders may do aerobic workouts on their days off from body building.

Going from skinny to muscular will also mean taking in a lot of calories. Hard gainers may eat up to 4000 calories a day. Many bodybuilders break their diet down to 40 percent protein, 40 percent carbohydrates, and 20 percent fats. Bodybuilders should eat six meals a day instead of three. This keeps the metabolism up and energy available.

The hard gainer works with heavy weights and fewer repetitions in order to build muscle.  They work their muscles to the maximum while working out. Then the resting periods allow for the muscles to grow.

Hard gainers may want to skip any aerobics activity for a while until they gain some bulk. They should stretch before the workout but do not do any aerobics. You do not want to burn more calories you want to conserve theme for muscle building.

It is a combination of diet, the workout, and rest that builds muscles. Hard gainers have to pay particular attention to how many calories they take in so they do not have a calorie deficit. It is possible to go from skinny to muscular.
