Skin Woes During Pregnancy
Pregnancy and motherhood are the crests of womanhood and every woman looks forward to this phase of life. The nine months of pregnancy are dotted with mammoth physiological and psychological changes. The hormones released during pregnancy can wreck havoc on your skin and leave you dull and tired rather than healthy and glowing.
ACNE OUTBREAKS
During pregnancy, acne is the most common complaint. Even if you didn’t have acne concerns as a teenager, it is likely that you are bound to witness an outbreak of pimples. Skin care takes a high importance during this stage and a daily routine of cleansing and moisturizing can reduce the impact of acne.
PATCHY SKIN
Your skin tends to develop brown or yellow patches during pregnancy. This is a case of cholasma where your skin darkens. The areas prone to darken are the forehead, eyes, cheeks and nose. The main reason for this condition is the hormones progesterone and estrogen which leaves behind this pigmentation.
EXCESSIVE PIGMENTATION
Pregnancy can cause an increased pigmentation which usually affects the areole i.e. the area around your nipples. This area darkens and it is normal for it to retain its darker shade even after the delivery. You can also get moles and freckles or the already existing spots may darken.
STRETCH MARKS
If there is one unavoidable consequence of pregnancy, they are stretch marks. The stretch marks are due to the increased tension on the skin as the size of your body increases to accommodate the foetus. The pink or purple marks are usually abundant on the breasts, thighs and your stomach. Stretch marks are not permanent and with adequate skin care, they can even fade away as time goes by.
A slight brown line can manifest itself from the navel to your pubic bone. This is known as ‘linea nigra’ and fades away with time. After the pregnancy, the skin tends to shed away rubbing of this line.
Pregnancy is all about changes in the hormonal activities and your body. A daily skin care schedule can reduce the ravages on your skin and leave it glowing and healthy.
