Recent studies reveal that stress alters the functioning of the Immune System making an individual prone to diseases he/she would otherwise be immune to. Many of us fall sick when we can least afford it such as during an exam week, before going on a job interview or when joining a new college or university.
Stress not only causes chronic illnesses but also disrupts the Immune System’s capacity to function properly. Some of the most common stress-related health problems are:
Cold and infection: Stress makes individuals extremely vulnerable to catching cold and other common infections and makes it difficult to fight them. This clearly indicates that stress wrecks havoc on one’s Immune System and needs to be combated in order to remain healthy.
Asthma and allergies: Stress can trigger an asthmatic attack and also makes an individual susceptible to developing hives, rashes, eczema and other allergies.
Cancer: The Immune System recognizes and destroys any abnormal cells in the body. Stress affects the Immune System in such a manner that a person may not be able to fight this deadly disease and might eventually succumb to it.
Headaches and migraines: Stress is known to bring about changes in blood vessels and increases muscle tension. This can result in excruciating headaches and migraines that are capable of disrupting the normal functioning of an individual on a day to day basis.
Insomnia and fatigue: When an individual is under stress the chemical messengers in the brain tend to promote alertness and ward off sleep. This imposes a number of health risks for the individual and can result in fatigue caused due to tiredness.
Digestive problems: Stress has a direct impact on appetite, production of acids in the stomach and bowel movements. It may result in diarrhea and constipation and may aggravate Irritable Bowel Syndrome and ulcers.
Chronic disease flare-ups: Research tells us that various chronic diseases such as genital herpes and HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) flare up when a person is extremely stressed out. Even diabetes is adversely affected by stress and diabetic individuals may require changes in the dosage of insulin when exposed to stress.
