Symptoms and Causes of Autonomic Neuropathy
What is the nervous system?
The nervous system is a complex network of specialized tissues and neurons. The nervous system is crucial for the functioning of all body systems for it is the control center of the body. The nervous system sends messages here and there, making all the organs function correctly. The nervous system is divided into two parts.
The brain and the spinal cord compose the central nervous system while nerves branching from the brain and spiral nerves complete the peripheral nervous system. The autonomic nervous system is a part of the peripheral nervous system, and regulates involuntary movements. Involuntary activities inside the body involve internal organs and glands.
But what would happen if the automatic nervous system were to be damaged?
Once the autonomic nervous system goes awry, the organs connected to the defective nerves would also act bizarrely. A disorder of the autonomic nerves induces autonomic neuropathy, where the nerves are unable to correctly send messages to and receive messages from specific organs.
The abnormalities are often associated with unusual combinations of different symptoms. After eating, you would feel like vomiting and become dizzy. This is due to a neuropathy in the autonomic nerves of the gastrointestinal tract, wherein the organ would have difficulty moving food through the intestines for digestion.
As a result, there would be a loss of appetite. Even a bar of chocolate would do for dinner. Oddly enough, despite the unusually suppressed hunger, the abdomen swells and the individual seems to urinate constantly.
The neuropathy would also trigger an odd reaction of your body if exposed to the sun. Even a few minutes under the heat would leave one soaked in sweat. Also, neuropathy in men would cause impotence.
So what are you going to do once you’ve noticed these symptoms?
It is strongly advised that the individual seek a neurologist’s help for a diagnostic test like the IPPA (Inspection, Palpation, Percussion and Auscultation) and EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) to determine whether the individual has autonomic neuropathy. Doctor may suggest wearing elastic socks and sleeping in such a way that head is raised above the bedlevel.
