Gout, being a form of arthritis, is characterized by severe pain in the joints that can get almost unbearable at times. Generally, occurs in middle aged males, but females are also prone to it after having reached menopause. Attacks of gout may suddenly come at night or anytime throughout the day too. Generally, they last for about ten days, after which they start tapering off only to appear again after a gap of a few days.
Excessive formation of uric acid leads to gout. Uric acid is always there in the body but its minimum level is prescribed and the complications arise after this limit of minimum level is exceeded due to some malfunctioning in the body. The excess of uric acid content gets deposited in and around the joints or body tissues. Due to such deposits one feels severe pains caused by swelling and inflammation in joints of the knees, feet, hands, wrists, and elbows..
Apart from the formation in excess of uric acid, following are other causes of gout.
• Excessive intake of alcohol and foods rich in protein and carbohydrates such as organ meats, anchovies, herring, asparagus, mushrooms, etc
• Heredity
• Stress or mental strain and High blood pressure
• Obesity and malfunctioning of the kidneys
• Lack of physical activities or exercises
• Severe pain and or swelling in joints, knees, toes, etc
• Skin around joints becomes shining red or purple
• Reddening around joints due to inflammation
• Loss of appetite and lack of sleep
• Malfunctioning of kidney
Increase intake of fluids to 6 to 8 ounces per day. This helps to relieve pain while preventing formation of kidney stones. For temporary relief rubbing of ice on the affected parts is helpful.
Other effective natural foods are French beans and bananas. Half a cup of juice of these beans taken once or twice a day provides a healing effect and reduces inflammation. Bananas are rich in minerals like phosphorus, which react with deposits of uric acid, thereby reducing the content of acid.
It is desirable to increase the content of Vitamin C by consuming citrus fruits, berries and tomatoes.
